Biology
Should I take that drug? Will I immunise my child? What happens if I don't lower my blood pressure? We want IVF. Are GM crops safe? I've got cancer. Will I ever recover from MRSA?
These are just a small selection of the very real and important questions and issues we may encounter in our lifetime. The study of Biology at Sherborne allows pupils to gain an understanding of the science behind such dilemmas and develop a discerning scientifically-literate mind.
IGCSE Biology is key to this empowerment. A recent reform to the national curriculum was criticised by leading educationalists and ethicists as 'not inspiring'. At Sherborne this is not acceptable. With a dedicated team of teachers and laboratory staff, excellent facilities and the decision to deliver a syllabus built on sound scientific principles, pupils are allowed to develop opinions that will serve them well, now and in the future.
With a success rate of 82% A*/As at IGCSE in 2008, the department encourages a healthy number of pupils into the 6th form. This is expected to rise in 2009, with the delivery of the International Baccalaureate Biology course, alongside the A-level.
The new 2008 A-level complements the IGCSE. Practical work and a field trip reinforce the biological theory, enabling pupils to compete for top university places and secure firm footings in biologically-related courses in Higher-Education.
Whether a pupil goes on to be a doctor, vet, researcher, teacher or just takes an interest in his own biological world, the Shirburnian will be a life-long enthusiast of the subject.
