Business Studies
Business Studies is about decision-making and risk-taking.
The Business Studies Department aims to elicit independent thought as well as analytical and evaluative skills. Through in-depth debating of business issues, pupils are encouraged to be more confident and capable of critical thinking.
Lessons will be based on case-studies and on their application, using simulations, role-play, computer packages and a wide range of media. Pupils are encouraged in their learning by a well stocked library with up to date publications. Recent study trips have included The Gaymer Cider Company and Numatic International, home of Henry the vacuum cleaner. This year we will be visiting GSK’s Aquafresh factory and Fabric nightclub in London.
The Business Studies course develops students' understanding of business activity in the public and private sectors, and the importance of innovation and change. Students learn how firms are established, financed and run, and how their activities are regulated. Factors influencing business decision-making are also considered, as are the essential values of cooperation and interdependence. Through their studies, students not only learn about business concepts and techniques but also enhance related skills such as numeracy and enquiry. The course provides both a foundation for further study at University, and an ideal preparation for the world of work.
