Mandarin
Mandarin is the official language in China and is the most widely spoken language in the world. With the rise of China's economic and political power in the 21st century, the number of learners has been increasing rapidly in the past few years in many western countries. Native Mandarin speakers can receive some support outside lessons to take GCSE. It is possible to arrange individual tuition for boys in the lower school wishing to study Mandarin but this would happen outside the timetable as an optional extra and incurs an additional charge.
Four Old Shirburnians are currently studying Chinese at degree level at Oxford, Leeds, SOAS and Nottingham.
