Physics
Teaching physics through practical experience
Over the last two years 72% of the 25-30 pupils in each sixth form year group have gained grades A* to B at A Level and 81% have gained grade A* to B at iGCSE. Currently all pupils are given the choice of studying separate sciences or Dual Award to iGCSE.
The Physics Department has five full-time and one part time teacher. The department is housed in the bottom floor of the 'Pilkington' Building which also includes Chemistry. There are five laboratories as well as an office and preparation room. The laboratories are serviced by a senior laboratory technician.
Physics at Sherborne has a strong tradition of practical excellence. At A level, pupils follow the AQA A course. The IB offers similar challenges and opportunities, and collaboration with Sherborne Girls. Physics A level at Sherborne is a popular subject, with approximately 30 AS level students each year. Twenty physicists went on to higher education to read physics, engineering or science subjects in 2011.
Physics is taught in purpose built laboratories with excellent facilities. Each year a number of outside speakers address the boys, and relevant trips add stimulus. Last year the Lower Sixth visited, Thales, the sonar specialists in Templecombe and this year we are planning to visit the Physics department of Southampton University.
In the 3rd, 4th and 5th forms pupils are prepared for Edexcel iGCSE Physics, or Dual Award Science. There is no coursework for these exams; instead pupils are allowed to develop their practical curiosity through innovative experiments and open-ended investigations. This course provides rigorous preparation for A level or IB and exceeds the demands of other GCSE courses.
