Theology

Why study theology? We think that religious beliefs provide a sense of purpose, a source of values and a way of life for many people, but not all our boys hold to a faith or have had an opportunity to think through the things they hold dear. So we seek to provide it: our courses divide firstly, into the study of philosophy and the way in which morally we carry out our beliefs; and, secondly, in close consultation with the Chaplaincy how Christian beliefs and values are a very positive approach for young people to follow; thirdly, we contrast the Christian standpoint of theology with opportunities to learn about others' beliefs.

We aim to show how these beliefs have shaped modern society, and to help boys evaluate their own beliefs with world religions like Buddhism, Islam and Judaism both to GCSE and A level. More traditionally, we still provide a thorough study A level course on New Testament themes. We believe it is essential that the subject challenges boys to reach the same standards of attainment as in any other subject. We encourage boys whether active members of a faith community, or none, to consider university courses when they leave; meanwhile, we organise a variety of field days including a day in prison (4th form), an analysis of worship in the different Christian Denominations (3rd form); VIth form Conferences on Philosophy and Ethics, a visit to buddhist viharas, an in-school meeting with Muslims on a range of topics including philosophical approaches to religion.
