Entry Information

REGISTRATION: Registration guarantees your son a place in the School, provided he passes the relevant entrance examination.

BOYS UNDER 10 YEARS: If for any reason, you decide that you would like your son to go to a particular House, you may register him for that House at any time. However, the earlier you do this the less likely you are to know who will be the Housemaster when your son arrives.

If you do not have a preference for a House, you should register him for the General List. Before or after registration you may want to visit one or two Houses to help you decide where to enrol your son. When you have made that decision, requests for a particular House should be made in writing to the Registrar. Boys may not hold a place or a waiting-place in more than one House.

BOYS OVER 10 YEARS: It is in your son's best interests to place him on a House list at the time of registration, or as soon after as possible. This is because Housemasters take responsibility for their entry lists. Late registration can make it difficult to ensure that he is allotted to the House of your first choice; some may be full already. Naturally, we do our best to comply with your wishes.

DATES OF ENTRY: The School has an entry once a year only, in September, and boys usually join when they are 13 years of age. It may, however, be correct for your son to join when he is marginally under 13 or marginally over 14. If you are in doubt about the correct year of entry for your son, please discuss it with either your son's present Head or with the Registrar.

CONTACT AFTER REGISTRATION: To help keep our records up to date we shall be in touch at the following times:

  1. Three years before entry - to confirm that you still wish your son to come to Sherborne.
  2. Two years before entry - to invite your son to a SHERBORNE AT WORK day when he can spend the day at school with others who will be in the same year.
  3. Eighteen months before entry - we shall ask you to confirm that your son is definitely coming to Sherborne. At this time we shall ask you to pay a deposit of £1,000 against his final term's fees. ,Ten months before entry - to invite you and your son to an INDUCTION DAY when you will meet other parents and boys, who will be in the same year.

SIXTH FORM BOYS: Each year we accept a number of boys into the Lower Sixth. Click the link to the right to find out more.

PARENTS' VISITS TO SHERBORNE: We are always very pleased to arrange visit to the School so that you may see for yourself the facilities we have on offer. To arrange a visit please telephone the Admissions Office on 01935 810403.

A visit to the School typically includes a tour of the School, a meeting with the Headmaster, a boarding house tour and if necessary a meeting with the Deputy Head (Academic).

HOUSE VISITS: We will do our best to arrange a visit to the House of your choice although this may not always be possible. If this is the case, we will arrange a visit to another House, ideally one where there is a vacancy for your son's year of entry. The Housemaster will be able to answer your questions regarding pastoral care, syllabus and teaching programmes. Where possible, boys will show you around.

SCHOOL VISITS: Tours of the School will normally be split with a boy and a member of staff doing half each. If there is a particular department in the School, e.g. the Art Department or Music School, please mention this when booking your appointment.
