| Clubs and Societies at Sherborne
Detailed look at life outside of the curriculum.
After lessons and at weekends there are so many activities for boys to choose from, only the really determined could become bored. To a large extent, they are allowed to follow their own inclinations, but Housemasters and personal tutors guide them and ensure that they use their time constructively.
There are numerous sporting opportunities - and not only for mainstream games. Many boys take advantage of associate membership of Sherborne Golf Club, and there is a thriving Sailing Club, with its own fleet of craft, which frequently spends summer weekends at Poole Harbour. Canoeists make expeditions to the Wye and Dart Rivers, and there are enthusiastic groups of rock climbers and sub-aqua divers - amongst many others.
The Music and Art Schools are both open and alive with activity at weekends, and there are societies catering for every kind of interest - from astronomy to photography. Each society is in the care of a member of staff, but the boys themselves are encouraged to help run and develop it. Often an enterprising boy will initiate a new society - and he can always be sure of support. Some interests may prove to be passing fashions, but enthusiasm is always supported.
Wednesday afternoons are set aside for activities outside the normal school curriculum. Boys have a choice of service to the local community, tuition in a special interest or hobby, or the Combined Cadet Force, within which they can pursue a variety of options. Many work towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and some train for the Ten Tors Expedition.
Saturday evening is a sociable time, with films in the Powell Theatre, frequent theatrical productions, House get-togethers and discos. Sixth Formers have their own Junior Common Room where they can enjoy music and relax with friends of both sexes.
