Strings

Head of Strings Sarah Drury conducts the Chamber Orchestra, regularly works with the Sinfonia and coaches chamber music on a weekly basis. The opportunity for strings players to become involved in music making at Sherborne is extensive: at any one time there is always a string quartet (currently there is one rehearsing for entry to the 2012 national Pro Corda Chamber Music Competition) and there are several times in the week when chamber groups such as two piano trios meet for rehearsal in the Music School and then for performance in one of the Friday lunchtime recitals in Cheap Street Church.

Potential scholarship candidates who are string players are particularly encouraged to be in touch with the Director of Music to arrange an informal pre-audition.

There are a large number of guitarists at Sherborne. A 41 piece guitar group was formed in 2009 for a strings competition: this has become a popular ensemble and first appeared publically at the grand opening of the new music school in July 2010. There are also two classical guitar ensembles, electric guitarists have the opportunity to join RocSoc and form a band, and acoustic guitarists participate in two annual Unplugged concerts. A 2009 innovation was the forming of a bluegrass group who have recently made a CD.
