Another year of excellent results for boys at Sherborne at GCSE, A-Level and the IB Diploma.
Boys at Sherborne have achieved excellent A-Level results yet again.
Sherborne, August 20th 2009
Those who sat the IB Diploma have also exceeded expectations with an average performance equivalent to 4 A grades at A-Level. For the 8th year in succession more than three quarters of all examinations taken were graded at the equivalent of A or B grade and nearly half were at grade A. Nearly a third of the year group achieved 3 or more A grades or their equivalent.
The results are, however, still provisional and we expect several grades to improve in the coming weeks and so, along with many other similar schools, we have decided not to release these provisional results to the newspapers. We will therefore, as in 2008, not appear in the end of August League Tables which have become so discredited. Detailed results will appear on our website in due course.
‘These results, which have come up to our usual high expectation, are a good reflection of a positive’s year work. We are delighted with the excellent performance of our boys in IB, which they sat for the first time this year,’ comments Simon Eliot, Headmaster. ‘We are also particularly pleased with the way in which the leavers of 2009 markedly improved their performance from AS level last summer. This is testament to the hard work of the boys and their teachers.’
The following local pupils achieved at least 3 A grades at A level: Alexander Clark of Sherborne, Oliver Longland of Sherborne, John Butler of Marnhull, Laurence Blair of Weymouth, Harry Wills of Frome, George Allen of Chilmark, Charles Garnett of Donhead St Mary, Harold Busby of Beaminster, Peter Day-Banks of Sherborne, Edward Hughes of Stourton Caundle, Hugh Crawford-Smith of Cucklington and Alexander White of Wareham. Edward Cripps of Stalbridge excelled in the IB Diploma.

Best ever GCSE results for boys at Sherborne.
Sherborne, August 27th 2009
Boys at Sherborne have managed to better last year’s record-breaking set of GCSE results by achieving 33.8% of grades at A*, 67.6% at A*- A and 98.4% at A*- C. These figures show considerable value-added to the predicted grades that were generated through the standardised baseline tests which the boys sat immediately after joining the school. The boys’ achievements are especially impressive given that they now sit the International GCSE in English, Maths and all three Sciences, exams which are widely regarded as being more challenging than GCSE.
‘We are absolutely delighted with this set of results and the boys and their teachers are to be congratulated on their hard work,’ comments Simon Eliot, Headmaster. ‘We are particularly pleased with the academic improvement that the boys have shown during their time with us so far and with the way in which they have responded to the rigour of the IGCSE exams. These results show that they have really risen to the challenges that we have set them. For this reason, we will soon be adopting IGCSE in French and History as well. ’
The following local pupils achieved particularly impressive results. Nicholas Boughton of Cary Fitzpaine and Alexander Carr of Sherborne achieved 5 A*s; George Ellwood of Wareham achieved 7 A*s; Peter Chalwin of Shaftesbury, James Craw of Milborne Port and Luke Nelson of Buckland Newton achieved 9 A*s; Thomas Gibbs of Holwell achieved 10 A*s; Charles Hensher of Mappowder and Alistair Hughes of Stourton Caundle achieved 11 A*s and Charles Leach of Bishop’s Caundle achieved 12 A*s.
