Peter Barton appointed as Principal of Sherborne Qatar
The Governors of Sherborne Qatar are delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Barton as the Principal of Sherborne School, Qatar. Peter was chosen from a very strong field of candidates and will lead the School into its second phase of development, during which a senior school will be opened and a new campus designed and built. 'We are delighted that Peter will be joining the school in this crucial phase of its development' says Chairman of Governors, Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmad Al Thani. 'I believe his broad range of educational experience at the highest levels in the UK will be a major asset both to our School and to education in Qatar as a whole'.
Peter Barton has been a Headteacher in Schools in the UK since 1990. In 2006 his career took a different course when he was appointed Head of Education and Change Management for the London Borough of Southwark's 'Schools for the future' programme. Here Peter supported and aided schools as they defined their vision for the future. The evaluation and approvals process complete, Peter is currently managing the delivery programme for the rebuilding and refurbishment of eleven London schools. 'I feel the challenges at Sherborne Qatar will utilise all the key skills I have developed during my years in Education. Nick Prowse has done an excellent job establishing the Prep School and I look forward to supporting him in its further development. However, my main task will be in developing the senior school and building the new campus.' Peter adds 'I am delighted to be able to contribute to the important work already taking place in delivering the best education to the children of Qatar. I am also looking forward to working closely with Sherborne in the UK'.
Sherborne Qatar was established in 2009 and is a member of the Outstanding Schools Programme of the Supreme Education Council. It currently is a Preparatory School serving Reception to Year 8 and will have around 520 pupils in September 2010. Nick Prowse, Headmaster of the Prep School says ' Sherborne Qatar is reaching the end of its first year and the staff and pupils have achieved a great deal in a short amount of time. The appointment of Peter Barton underlines the commitment of the Board to achieve its ambition to create a great School in Qatar. I am genuinely excited about working with, and learning from, a man with such an outstanding career in education'.
Peter, who is married to Carol and has two children at university in the UK, moves to Doha and joins Sherborne Qatar in early September 2010.
