Joint Sherborne Schools' INSET 8 February

Each year the three senior schools in Sherborne - The Gryphon, Sherborne and Sherborne Girls - work collaboratively to provide a joint training opportunity for our teaching staff with a focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning.

This year we are focusing on developing the skills of our teachers in preparing students for transition to university. Representatives from other local state and independent schools have also been invited. The event is taking place on all three school campuses.

22 academic staff from 14 universities, from Cardiff to London, are taking part in a discussion with Sixth Form teachers in specialist subject groups.

Delegates have been asked to lead discussions on the following aspects:

  • What transition difficulties do first year students experience?
  • What is the range of courses in your subject that can be studied in Higher Education?
  • What are the differences between these courses?
  • What are the dominant teaching and assessment styles in your subject in Higher Education?
  • Preferred subject combinations to study your subject in Higher Education
  • What do you look for in a UCAS application from a student who wishes to study your subject in Higher Education?

It is hoped that this event will enhance the understanding both of school and university staff about the academic issues faced by students in the transition from school to university.
