Sherborne School Confirmation Weekend

Sherborne School Confirmation was a special service this year as it was shared with 21 of the Anglican girls from Leweston School. Between the two schools, 75 young people publicly declared their faith in Sherborne Abbey before the Bishop of Sherborne, The Right Reverend Dr Graham Kings, and many of their family and friends.

The Sherborne School candidates began their Confirmation weekend with a retreat at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester where they reflected on the main tenets of the Christian faith and then on how these could be put into practice in their own lives. In the afternoon they visited Hilfield Friary and were given an introduction to Franciscan spirituality through a meditative walk led by a member of their lay community.

Friday evening saw the Bishop of Sherborne baptising three candidates in the candlelit Eucharist in the school Chapel. It was a beautifully intimate service and all the confirmation candidates were there to support those being baptised.
On the day of the Confirmation itself, the sixth form Chapel Wardens served the Confirmands a cooked breakfast to set them up for the two hour service ahead of them. Despite being the coldest day of the year, the Abbey was full of supporters for the Confirmands as they renewed the promises made at their baptisms. Each candidate was presented to the Bishop by their specially chosen sponsor and it was wonderful to see them all confirmed as full members of Christ's church.
