Chamber Music in Abbey Festival

The annual Sherborne Abbey Festival started on Friday 4th May and, as has been the case for twelve years, Sherborne School was proud to provide the curtain-raiser for the five day event. Particularly impressive was the Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3, BWV 1048, which revealed the strings department on superb form with talented leader David Leach and Sarah Drury (Head of Strings) conducting from the violin. A fine performance of one of this year’s National Pro Corda Chamber Music Competition entries, the brass trio with Poulenc’s demanding three movement Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone, followed the Chamber Orchestra and demonstrated a very polished performance of much stamina. Further individual performances by Cosimo Malizia (saxophone), Toby Christey-Clover (clarinet), Hamish Dudgeon (trumpet) and Fred Gordon (saxophone) in music by Trevor Hold, Schumann, Hubeau and Bach provided a concert second half of what was afterwards described as being one of the strongest starts to the festival in recent years.
