Tea Time Jazz Concert Most Popular Ever

The Abbey Festival hosted a tea-time jazz concert at 3.45 pm on Friday 4th May in Sherborne School's Tindall Recital Hall. This annual event moved from Castleton Church in 2011 when the new recital hall became available, but already numbers attending the concert exceeded capacity and many members of the public had to be content with extra seating in the Atrium. Performing in the one hour concert were both the Swing Band (directed by James Henderson) and the Jazz Band (directed by Anthony Ingle), in repertoire which displayed both bands to be on superb musical form: the demanding be-bop arrangements of Salt Peanuts, Anthropology and Yardbird Suite were extremely tight musically, and Anthony Ingle’s funk music was brilliantly performed by the one-to-a-part Jazz Band.

At the end of April the Swing Band recorded a third CD in as many years, which will be launched at “Sherborne All Stars” Dinner and Jazz on Friday 2nd June. Members of the Jazz Band (Oliver Toomey, Felix Stickland and Toby Cairns) also recorded an Oscar Peterson Tribute CD, which should be available around the same time. Jazz at Sherborne continues to be of premier quality.
