Take One Picture

Take One Picture is the National Gallery's scheme for primary schools. Each year the Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in the classroom. The challenge is for the schools to use the image imaginatively in the classroom, both as a stimulus for artwork, and for work in more unexpected curriculum areas. Sherborne Schools Cluster is a federation of village schools around the town who work together and with the Art School and the Oliver Holt Gallery at Sherborne. This year's painting was Tobias and the Angel by Andrea del Verrocchio. Children from All Saints Primary School Bishops Caundle, Thornford CE VA Primary School, Buckland Newton CE Primary School, St Mary's CE VC Primary School Bradford Abbas and Trent Young's Endowed CE VA School participated in an art workshop day at Sherborne.

The exhibition in the Oliver Holt Gallery draws together the art produced by all of the schools and expresses the vitality of the children's engagement with the painting. The range of themes and interpretations that emerge is a wonderful demonstration of the way great art works can animate and inspire young people's creativity and curiosity.

Sherborne Music Festival on the 1st and 2nd of July is a celebration of the opening of a new £3.5 million music school at Sherborne School. To mark this landmark event we are opening our doors to the public and invite you to come and see the new School and hear concerts from a blue grass band to a symphony orchestra. Over the two days there will be 181 boys playing, stretching from thirteen to eighteen years of age.

Peter Barton appointed as Principal of Sherborne Qatar

The Governors of Sherborne Qatar are delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Barton as the Principal of Sherborne School, Qatar. Peter was chosen from a very strong field of candidates and will lead the School into its second phase of development, during which a senior school will be opened and a new campus designed and built. 'We are delighted that Peter will be joining the school in this crucial phase of its development' says Chairman of Governors, Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmad Al Thani. 'I believe his broad range of educational experience at the highest levels in the UK will be a major asset both to our School and to education in Qatar as a whole'.

Peter Barton has been a Headteacher in Schools in the UK since 1990. In 2006 his career took a different course when he was appointed Head of Education and Change Management for the London Borough of Southwark's 'Schools for the future' programme. Here Peter supported and aided schools as they defined their vision for the future. The evaluation and approvals process complete, Peter is currently managing the delivery programme for the rebuilding and refurbishment of eleven London schools. 'I feel the challenges at Sherborne Qatar will utilise all the key skills I have developed during my years in Education. Nick Prowse has done an excellent job establishing the Prep School and I look forward to supporting him in its further development. However, my main task will be in developing the senior school and building the new campus.' Peter adds 'I am delighted to be able to contribute to the important work already taking place in delivering the best education to the children of Qatar. I am also looking forward to working closely with Sherborne in the UK'.

Sherborne Qatar was established in 2009 and is a member of the Outstanding Schools Programme of the Supreme Education Council. It currently is a Preparatory School serving Reception to Year 8 and will have around 520 pupils in September 2010. Nick Prowse, Headmaster of the Prep School says ' Sherborne Qatar is reaching the end of its first year and the staff and pupils have achieved a great deal in a short amount of time. The appointment of Peter Barton underlines the commitment of the Board to achieve its ambition to create a great School in Qatar. I am genuinely excited about working with, and learning from, a man with such an outstanding career in education'.

Peter, who is married to Carol and has two children at university in the UK, moves to Doha and joins Sherborne Qatar in early September 2010.

Stone Balancer comes to Sherborne

Adrian Gray, Dorset's finest exponent of the art (science?) of Stone Balancing, visited Sherborne today where he created some miraculous but temporary sculptures from balanced stones on the lawn outside the Headmaster's office. Perplexed onlookers watched awhile; it has to be seen to be believed.

How does it work?
All the stones are balanced, strictly without the aid of adhesive, pins or computer manipulation. They remain in place through the natural force of gravity and friction. 'Nature's glue' sustains them in these seemingly impossible positions and it is the capricious natural forces of wind or waves that returns them to obscurity.

'The most beautiful thing one can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all Art and Science' (Einstein).

Drug Education Presentation

Sherborne welcomed Jonnie Leach last weekend to give presentations to the School on drug awareness and the dangers of drug addiction. Mr Leach talked to Third and Fourth Form boys and gave a separate presentation to parents.

Drawing from personal experience and delivered in a non-judgmental and honest way, the talk focussed on drugs and their effects, the criminal implications of drug use, the health aspects and the often devastating long term consequences.

Interschool Velodrome Championship

Sherborne fielded a team at last week's inaugural inter-school velodrome championship, hosted by Dulwich College at Herne Hill velodrome, South London. Ten teams took part.

Despite being a man down, our team (Will Rudgard U6g and Harry Gordon U6c) acquitted themselves extremely well. After some hard training they had developed the endurance, speed and sprinting power to match some formidable opposition in the form of Westminster, Millfield and no less than five Dulwich teams; what they lacked was deep velodrome experience and Dulwich and Westminster carried the day with a real tactical edge. We "borrowed" Tristram Lambert from Charters School, which was two men down, and are grateful to him for his efforts.

Team Pursuit (1 mile): Sherborne took on the slick and highly aggressive Dulwich "A" team, who took gold in the overall rankings with a time of 2:07.72. Having dropped Harry in the penultimate lap after his heroic draughting, Will and Tristram romped home to take the bronze medal with a time of 2:16.00.

In the Points Race Sherborne took a creditable 7 points in the intermediate sprints but this wasn't enough to take us into the top three.

The Match Sprint, a head-to-head one lap knockout competition saw Will Rudgard up against the best that Dulwich could offer. Having lost the tactical advantage coming down off the first bank, Will went all out to overtake his rival but didn't quite manage it, finishing 0.18 seconds behind. He was the only second placed rider in any of the match sprints to finish less than 1s behind.

The final event was the nail-biting Devil Take the Hindmost race. Will Rudgard and Harry Gordon performed strongly on the knockout laps, staying near the head of the pack and eventually took the lead, really raising the pace and dominating the field (see picture). Tragically, though, a Dulwich rider made a catastrophic misjudgement in an increasingly tight pack and, in the third crash of the day, Harry came down heavily, smashing his bike helmet and sustaining multiple fractures to his right clavicle. This seemed to put Will off his stride; the distraction of seeing his stricken team mate meant he missed out on taking the final sprint, which should have been his for the taking.

Injury apart, the day saw some great racing and the beginnings of some serious interschool competition. Look out for the same event next year (but removed from exam season!) and - we hope - a joint Sherborne/Millfield hosted criterium.

Sherborne CCF at the Dorset Cadet Challenge 2010

The Dorset Cadet Challenge has been a feature of the CCF's calendar for over a decade. Run by 43 Wessex brigade and held at Bovington Camp, it allows cadets from the county's cadets forces to match their skills against each other in three arduous events, for which this year the team undertook considerable preparation.

The first event comprised a speed march of nearly four miles. This demands that individuals carry all equipment necessary for combat as if advancing to battle, at a typical speed of nine kilometres per hour. The aforesaid training for this event had taken place at 7am on the Mondays and Fridays of the Lent term preceding the event. Very committed members of the CCF staff accompanied the team on long runs with empty stomachs, and without this such fitness would not have been achieved. Thankfully, and rewardingly, we scored most highly on the run, beating all other teams. This served as a reminder to everyone that it would have taken only one lagging member to lower our score, but each had given his all to great success.

Before the pulse could drop, we were taken to the dismounted close combat training range where a set of ten aimed shots is taken at a screen representing a battlefield digitally. This device is used to train all military personnel, before and after deployment, with close competition for the smallest shot pattern. We did not score so highly this event, partly due to our natural inaccuracy and inexperience, and perhaps also forgetfulness of the need to produce not one accurate shot, but ten as tightly grouped as possible.

Several hours elapsed, during which we visited the Bovington Tank Museum, learning more generally about warfare and appreciating the evolutionary history of these well-designed, and now indispensible weapons.

Our final event was the obstacle course. A weekend's training at a nearby course had improved our technique slightly. The biggest challenge is undoubtedly a twelve-foot wall, demanding considered and practised technique. Fortunately, each member of the team succeeded here also, and although we had won neither of the last two events, our average position placed us well clear of the opposition.

The team would like to thank all those who facilitated the training and preparation of the team, and feels strongly that the CCF's ongoing success would not be possible without their unseen efforts.

Sherborne Pupil wins place at National Youth Theatre

Sherborne is proud to report that Toby Cairns (4a) has won a coveted place on the National Youth Theatre's summer course 2010. This two week course during the summer break involves training with leading drama tutors and theatre specialists, giving the students unique opportunities to try new things in a professional environment.

Toby has been involved in school drama since he first joined Sherborne. He has worked backstage on School productions of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Miracle in Rwanda' and has played lead roles as Piggy in 'Lord of the Flies' and more recently as worldy-wise servant Tranio in 'Taming of the Shrew'.

The objectives of the National Youth Theatre's course is to give new members an experience of drama school while fostering the overall aims of the company: enthusiasm, ensemble and the production of high quality theatre.

After the course, Toby will be eligible to audition for NYT productions.

International Mathematical Olympiad 2010

The aim of the IMOK (Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad and Kangaroo) is to provide encouragement and stimulation to mathematically able young people.

The IMOK Olympiad is the invitation-only follow-up competition of the UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge held in February. This year, some 1500 pupils participated worldwide and the top 25% received a Certificate of Distinction. One such pupil is Nicholas Glasse (5a). Nicholas has always been a gifted young Mathematician, having secured a Gold Medal in the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge for the past two years, and is clearly someone who relishes the challenges posed by these demanding questions. The Mathematics Department is thrilled with his achievement and very much hope that he will take his Mathematics all the way to university!

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship mathematics competition for school students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 80 countries from 5 continents.

Nicholas Glasse (5a) has been awarded a Certificate of Distinction from the IMO, which is awarded to only the top 25% of students worldwide.

Sherborne's CCF Attends to Gibraltar's War Graves

The histories of Sherborne School Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and the Gibraltar Army Cadet Force could hardly be more different. Sherborne CCF was formed in 1859 whilst Gibraltar’s Army Cadet Force was formed no more than six months ago.

But this difference in age does not prevent the two forces from pulling well together. Sherborne and local cadets spent a Sunday over the Easter break tidying the Commonwealth war graves in Gibraltar’s cemetery.

‘The basis of the community project is that we wanted to put something back into the community as a thank-you,’ said Major Ben Sunderland, Sherborne’s Contingent Commander.

‘We arrived on Friday and had a really good historical tour of the Upper Rock on Saturday,’ said cadet James Dawson. ‘And in today’s task we feel we are doing something for many people who died for our country, ‘added cadet Reuben Matthew.

Working alongside James and Reuben were Jake O’Donohue and Lewis Kelly of the Gibraltar Army Cadet Force. ‘We are just weeding and generally tidying up the graves but we feel that we are doing something useful,’ said Jake.

For the rest of the week, Sherborne’s cadets carried out a mixture of military training at Buffadero Training Centre and adventurous training at Gun Wharf.

‘On Wednesday evening the cadets from Gibraltar and Sherborne held a joint training evening up at Buffaderu,’ added Captain Christian Correa of the Gibraltar Force. It seems that this could be the start of a useful association between two cadet forces with a very different history.

Four Sherborne pupils are celebrating this morning after winning their matches at the LTA Dorset Schools' Doubles held yesterday at Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne.

Merlin Goldsworthy (U6b) and John Montgomery (L6g) are worthy winners of the U19 title having won over Poole Grammar in the final.

Winners of the U14 title are Ellis Trickett (3f) and James Sewry (3d) who met Poole Grammar in the semi-final and Thomas Hardye's in the final.

Sherborne Pupil Awarded rare Distinction

Sherborne is very proud to announce that George Chattey (U6 Music Scholar in Abbeylands) has achieved a Distinction in his ATCL Flute Diploma. To be successful in a Diploma examination during a school career is always an achievement within itself, but a Distinction at this level is extremely rare and one of few nationally.

In his Recital Programme, George performed J.S.Bach’s Sonata in E major BWV No.1035, Doppler’s Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise and Elgin Burton’s Sonatina. Accompanied by Jenny Coultas (Assistant Director of Music and Head of Keyboard Studies), George’s programme was heard a few days ahead of the Diploma by an audience of some 40 people in the OMS Recital Room when his playing was received with great acclaim.

Those interested in hearing George’s playing before he leaves Sherborne in July will wish to know that he will be performing the diploma programme in the brand new Simon Tindall Recital Hall during the celebrations and two day Music Festival surrounding both its and the new Music School’s opening on July 1st and 2nd.

Director of Music James Henderson said, “We are all thrilled with George’s achievement. He is an outstanding player who has contributed an enormous amount to Sherborne’s music in the last five years, as the principle flautist in the Symphony Orchestra, as a leading light in the School’s Chamber Music both on the flute and recorders – he has ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction on the recorder – and also as a tenor in the Chapel Choir. His Distinction in the ATCL is a mark of his great musicianship.”

Sherborne Pupil wins Imperial College Science prize

Sherborne School fifth former Tom Hole has won the 2009 Imperial College Science Essay prize for his answer to the question "Can renewable energy sources solve the UK's energy problems?". Tom and another highly commended pupil, Paul de Meillac, are invited to the black-tie dinner and presentation in London tonight, where Tom will receive his prize.

Sherborne School is delighted that so many pupils chose to enter the contest this year. This is the same competition that former pupil Hassan Al Halwachi won, and in which Jamie Burke, the current Head of School, was runner up in 2008.

This year the standard of essay was incredibly high, and three of the Sherborne essays were shortlisted by Imperial College as being in the top 10% of all entrants nationally; these three were written by Paul de Meillac (5b), Charlie Hensher (L6a) and Tom Hole (5b).

Three further essays have been highly commended, and these were written by Tristan Merbecks (L6g), Charles Wing (5e) and Simon Davies (L6m).

Sherborne School featured in recent German documentary on English Independent Schools

Motivated by the interest in English boarding schools portrayed in recent films, German documentary maker, Das Erste, visited Sherborne School to film the life of a German student.

The film, called 'Lernen wie Harry Potter', features a number of students from Germany whose parents have chosen English boarding schools for their children's education rather than German schools.

Success at first Judo Tournament

Sherborne 9 - Winchester College 4. 28th January 2010.

Despite running a Judo club for 18 months this 'freiendly' match was its first outing. With new members spread across the school age range it was almost impossible to guess what the outcome would be. It was a great opportunity for our boys to experience a different club and a different way of doing things. I think the first phase, a long “warm up” would have been found quite novel. Luckily it didn’t tire them too much.

When the actual competition started the Sherborne boys showed a considerable focus on their tasks and their obvious superiority in strength and stamina showed itself.

The score was Sherborne – 9, Winchester – 4 Draw - 1. A great showing for a first time. We appreciate the generosity of spirit of Winchester College for fighting us of such little experience; we must really give our thanks to them for this great opportunity.

New Headmaster Appointment

The Governors have appointed Christopher Davis to be Headmaster from 1 September 2010. Simon Eliot will have completed ten most distinguished years as Headmaster by then and they are extremely grateful to him for his successful stewardship of this great school.

Christopher Davis, the son of a schoolmaster, was educated at Eton College during which time he was a clarinettist in the National Youth Orchestra and played cricket for the XI. He read English Literature at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge where he won a Manners Scholarship. After graduation, he spent a year teaching at St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury before joining the Bank of England’s International Division. He was then seconded to the Cabinet Office for two years during the First Gulf War before returning to edit and manage the Bank’s Quarterly Bulletin and the introduction of its new Inflation Report.

In 1994, he returned to teaching, joining the English Department at Eton College, where he has since taken up a wide range of responsibilities, from overseeing the Sports and Literary Societies, and coaching several games, to chairing the Staff Remuneration and Conditions of Service Committee. Since 2001, he has been housemaster of Warre House.

He is married, to Innes, and has two daughters aged 10 and 7.

Boys pitch business idea to Dulux

Seven Sherborne boys have pitched their idea for an iPhone application concept to Dulux. The boys worked on their idea whilst on a Young British Entrepreneur course held at school. They developed an impressive pitch, supported by Young British Entrepreneur, and we look forward to hearing about their success.

Sherborne takes part in Ski Racing Tournament

On Friday 22nd January, two teams of four boys will be travelling to Meiringen, Switzerland, to take part in the annual ski-racing competition for schoolboys. Last year, three boys entered the competition for the first time; veterans Julian Chajecki (L6m) and Charlie Leach (L6b) are joined this year by George Ellwood (L6b) and Will Gibbon (L6m) to make up the senior team. Simon Fraser (4e), Hugo Howarth (3c), Paul Myatt (3b) and Daniel Versloot (4g) form the junior team. Fourteen other schools, including Tonbridge, Dulwich College and St Paul’s are also taking part in the three-day event, which involves the Parallel, Giant Slalom, and Slalom disciplines.

Conditions look set fair for an excellent few days’ skiing.

Two Sherborne Boys enjoy flight with the Royal Navy

Simon Wrey (L6f) and Charlie Hensher (L6a) represented the School's CCF when they attended an Air Experience Day with the Royal Navy's 727 Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton in November 2009. The visit was part of activities organised by the Royal Navy's 'Fly 100' centenary celebrations.

The boys made the most of the rare opportunity for a civilian to fly a training aircraft called a Grob 115e. "Our instructor carried out aerobatic manoeuvres including loops and barrel rolls and we were able to take the controls during the flight. We flew over the School which was amazing to see from the air. It was a pretty intensive day but great fun and we came away really impressed by the Fleet Air Arm." says Simon.

Charlie is a member of the Royal Marines section of the CCF and is keen to join the Royal Marines as a Commando Surgeon.

Sherborne has attained two outstanding awards in 2009 from independent assessors.

New Legislation for Overseas Students

We have just been alerted to the fact that a Tier 4 student entering the country needs to carry with them a parental consent letter to reassure Border Force colleagues that parents are aware of the child’s destination and that they are going into safe hands. See http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/travellingtotheuk/Enteringtheuk/arrivingatukborder/ for details.

While this states that for a person travelling with someone else’s child, it is advisable to have a letter of consent with them, this is equally applicable to children who may be travelling by themselves.

We have been informed that while a consent form may state the name and telephone contact details of the person collecting the child from the airport, a school may fill in their details stating that the collecting person will carry school identification.

This measure is a consequence of UKBA’s duty to safeguard children until they reach their intended destination. Apparently, immigration personnel will be checking that a child at an airport goes into safe hands.

We hope this alert will be in time for you to inform Tier 4 parents of the need to send the letter of consent with their child returning to school in January.

Sherborne Announces new Chaplain

Sherborne is pleased to announce that the new Chaplain from September 2010, in succession to the Reverend Stephen Gray, will be the Reverend Lindsay Collins, currently Senior Chaplain at King’s College School, Wimbledon (since 2004). Before that she was Chaplain and Head of RS at St. Paul’s Girls’ School (2001-4) and previously Chaplain and Head of RS at Cokethorpe School, Witney (1999-2001) and teacher of RS at Yateley Comprehensive School (1992-5). She was ordained priest in 1998.

Lindsay is married to Ross who is also ordained. They have two children: Lucy aged 12 and Alistair aged 10. Lindsay lists hill-walking, swimming and running among her interests and she plays the violin and bassoon.

New Housemasters are announced

Sherborne is delighted to announce the appointment of new Housemasters to School House and Harper House.

Mr Kester Jackson will succeed Peter Watts as Housemaster of School House in September 2010. Kester teaches Religious Studies, Theology and Philosophy and Ethics. He is an experienced tutor, is a member of the Choir and coaches tennis and soccer. He is married to Clare, who is the School’s Head of Woodwind. They have two children of 8 and 6.

In 2010 Dr Jeremy Wadham will also take over Harper House from Simon Tremewan. Jeremy has taught biology at Sherborne since 1997 and he is Master i/c tennis, having previously run the School’s hockey. Jeremy is married to Stephanie and they have three children of 13, 11 and 7.

Boys cook for school charities

Due to popular demand Sherborne School's Charity Restaurant will open its doors again for one night only: Saturday 28th November 2009.

Over the last few weeks, Adrian Williams, Catering Manager, has been training some Lower Sixth boys in culinary skills and helping them to devise a sumptuous menu.

Served in the historic Old School Room the three courses will be a fixed price of £25 per person. Service will start at 18:00H and last orders will be taken at 20:30H.

This event coincides with the school performance of 'Fiddler on the Roof'. Early tables will be finished in time to attend the performance.

Gargoyle on Bodleian Library designed by Sherborne Boy

Current Abbey House boy Henry Chadwick was in Oxford recently to meet award-winning children's author, Phillip Pullman. Two years previously Henry had entered a competition to 'Design-a-Gargoyle' launched by the University of Oxford. Henry's design, based upon 'Three Men in a Boat', was one of the twelve finalists, each of which has been immortalised in stone and now sits atop the Bodleian Library in the city.

This September Henry, and the other finalists, travelled to Oxford for the official unveiling and to meet Mr Pullman.

Sherborne at the Edinburgh Fringe 2009

Following last year’s successful trip, Sherborne School again took a show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this Summer. Neville’s Island by Tim Firth was performed for 7 nights, to very appreciative audiences, at C venues in the city centre. Directed by Theatre Manager Jim Donnelly, the cast included Luke MacKay (e), Hubert Mainwaring-Burton (g), Ed Dixon (f) , George Day (f), supported by a technical crew of Harry Latham (a) and Chris Findlay (a).

Shirburnian Economist Highly Commended in competition

Alex Chajecki (OS 2009, f), who left Sherborne in the summer, has been Highly Commended in the Royal Economics Society 2009 Young Economist of the Year competition, with an essay entitled 'Are Recessions Inevitable?’. The competition attracted nearly 500 entries from 180 schools around the world. A 'Highly Commended' award places Alex in the top 30 of entries.

Alex also achieved 98% in his Economics A level; obtaining full marks in 4 out of the 6 modules taken. He is applying to read Economics at Cambridge and we wish him every success for the future.

Sherborne Boy performs in trafalgar Square

Harry Onslow (Lower Sixth) took to the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square recently to sing excerpts from Les Misérables. Standing for a full hour between 11pm and midnight, and dressed in Black Tie, the theme for Harry's presentation was "dinner parties and musicals"! A backing track - which was playing just the right volume to be audible from within a few yards of the plinth - provided accompaniment for him to sing almost every number from the show with which he was involved when it was staged at Sherborne in November 2007. Chorus numbers such as "Do you hear the people sing?" received rapturous applause whilst many in the crowd (numbering some 150 at various stages in the hour) joined in with the bits which they knew. At the end of the hour, when possibly Harry's voice was just beginning to sound a little tired, Harry said "It was amazing how quickly the time went: I enjoyed every minute of it and would do it again! Les Misérables is one of my favourite shows and it was fun to sing it on my own - I'll always remember this occasion."

Another year of excellent results for boys at Sherborne at GCSE, A-Level and the IB Diploma.

Boys at Sherborne have achieved excellent A-Level results yet again.

Those who sat the IB Diploma have also exceeded expectations with an average performance equivalent to 4 A grades at A-Level. For the 8th year in succession more than three quarters of all examinations taken were graded at the equivalent of A or B grade and nearly half were at grade A. Nearly a third of the year group achieved 3 or more A grades or their equivalent.

The results are, however, still provisional and we expect several grades to improve in the coming weeks and so, along with many other similar schools, we have decided not to release these provisional results to the newspapers. We will therefore, as in 2008, not appear in the end of August League Tables which have become so discredited. Detailed results will appear on our website in due course.

‘These results, which have come up to our usual high expectation, are a good reflection of a positive’s year work. We are delighted with the excellent performance of our boys in IB, which they sat for the first time this year,’ comments Simon Eliot, Headmaster. ‘We are also particularly pleased with the way in which the leavers of 2009 markedly improved their performance from AS level last summer. This is testament to the hard work of the boys and their teachers.’

Best ever GCSE results for boys at Sherborne.

Boys at Sherborne have managed to better last year’s record-breaking set of GCSE results by achieving 33.8% of grades at A*, 67.6% at A*- A and 98.4% at A*- C. These figures show considerable value-added to the predicted grades that were generated through the standardised baseline tests which the boys sat immediately after joining the school. The boys’ achievements are especially impressive given that they now sit the International GCSE in English, Maths and all three Sciences, exams which are widely regarded as being more challenging than GCSE.

‘We are absolutely delighted with this set of results and the boys and their teachers are to be congratulated on their hard work,’ comments Simon Eliot, Headmaster. ‘We are particularly pleased with the academic improvement that the boys have shown during their time with us so far and with the way in which they have responded to the rigour of the IGCSE exams. These results show that they have really risen to the challenges that we have set them. For this reason, we will soon be adopting IGCSE in French and History as well. ’

Boys Run Original Marathon in Athens Raising £15,000 for charities

Three Sixth Form boys: Jamie Burke (L6b), Theo Cooke (L6f) and Merlin Goldsworthy (L6b), with the Sherborne School Chaplain Rev’d Stephen Gray, ran the original Marathon in Greece on July 11th from Marathon to Athens.

They raised over £15,000 for Charity running the distance in four hours and just over. Stephen Gray commented "It was an unforgettable experience. Thank you to all who gave so generously."

Theo and the Chaplain ran for the School’s REACH Rwanda link which they visited last October. Money will support a multi-purpose hall in Kayonza that will facilitate music, drama and offer conferences and counselling for the many that still carry the wounds of the genocide from 1994. Further funds will support a very poor primary school in Kigali run by a Rwandan priest and will provide basic facilities for the community such as desks, toilet facilities and an overhead projector.

Meanwhile Jamie and Merlin ran for “The Charlie Sumption Memorial Fund” in memory of a previous pupil who died tragically in 2006. The charity aims to enrich the lives of Kenyans through providing scholarships for children attending Mutunyi Primary School to enable them to move onto secondary school and so have chance of a better future.

Lyon House Blind Auction

Bidding has now closed.

The Lyon House Auction has just closed and I wanted to say thank-you to all of you, lucky bidders or not, for the support given to this event. We have raised over £2,500 from this one initiative and are fast closing in on our target of £10,000 after only 3 months of fund raising.

My thanks to you all and may I also say a huge thank you to the parents of Lyon House and their considerable generosity in sponsoring this auction.

It is under a tree in the garden of that school where Rati Moyo (2002-2007) was buried following a tragic accident whilst on his gap year last March. Rati’s aunt runs the FEBA School which is a charity set up to educate some of the most disadvantaged children (many orphans to AIDS) in Zambia.

In October, a dozen boys and staff will be taking the proceeds of a year’s fund-raising as well as a substantial amount of Sherborne enthusiasm, out to Zambia with the aim of building a new wing to the school and working with the children to help improve their lives.

C Day Lewis Society Patron dies

The School has been saddened to hear the news of the death of Jill Balcon, widow of former pupil Cecil Day-Lewis and patron of the School's Cecil Day-Lewis Society.

A tribute to Jill appeared in last Sunday's Observer Review section by Cecil's biographer Peter Stanford, and the final paragraph reads thus;

"It is Jill's voice that I will remember. The impact I saw it have only last year when we performed together for a group of sixth formers at Sherborne School, will, for me and I suspect them, live on as the benchmark of how the poetic canon should be recited."

Sherborne School and Sherborne Girls' first IB results

We are delighted to announce the first ever International Baccalaureate results for Sherborne School and Sherborne Girls in a joint venture. The 2009 cohort have just completed their two year courses in IB covering six subjects. There are 11 boys and 9 girls and they come from the UK and around the world including from Columbia, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy and Japan.

The results exceed our expectations with both Schools working on a genuinely collaborative scheme of mixed classes and joint teaching. This is the first of its kind in the UK. The average point score per candidate, at 33, counts as 489 UCAS points on the UCAS tariff (480 UCAS points is equivalent to four A grades at A level). One candidate, Kate Hamilton, secured 44 points out of a maximum 45. Last year, of the 39,514 candidates worldwide, only 219 got 44 marks or above.

The pupils have not just secured these excellent examination results but have also taken part in an exciting programme that has included charitable work in Ecuador, teaching in local primary schools and studying subjects new to Sherborne such as Philosophy and Mandarin.

We are delighted to announce that the course is becoming increasingly popular, with 32 students across the two Schools starting the International Baccalaureate in September 2009.

Golf Squad bring back trophies from the ISGA 'The Shire' tournament 29th June 2009

Yesterday, 29th June, Sherborne's Golf Squad achieved great success at The Shire Trophy organised by the Independent Schools' Golf Association.

Here, Mark Pryor, Master in Charge of Golf, reports:

"The opening hole was 154 yards to an island green – this set the tone for the round on a course where there was PLENTY of water.

Robbie Busher (L6a) carded a gross 73 (nett 69). He was 1 under gross on the 17th tee but a double bogey on this par three just tipped him the other side of par. He holed a good 6 footer for par on 18.

Zaidoon Zakaria (U6f)scored 83 (nett 73) and Lewis Hinch (U6d) 89 (nett 74). This gave us a nett total (best two to count) of 142, winning on countback.

Robbie got the third lowest gross total (in a field of over 90); the best shooting a one-under 71.

So, trophy (and Galvin Green top) for Robbie and team trophy (to be delivered, Claire’s Court left it behind) along with individual trophies for the team….oh, and I won the best nett on their academy course (35, nett 28).

The boys were really good value and gave an EXCELLENT account for themselves as golfers."

Tennis Success for 1st Team

1st IV tennis team beat Richard Huish A, last year's 9th rated team in the country, to reach the regional final of the Glanvill Cup.

A superb team performance that resulted in a resounding victory that reflected the realization of each player’s potential. Against an opposition with an accumulated ratings standard of 7 levels higher, the 1st IV pulled out the stops and displayed unsurpassed levels of discipline and application thus far shown this season. Vitaly Gan (a) dominated with a style of play finely balanced between power and consistency; Merlin Goldsworthy (b) remained resolute with his ‘rock solid’ hitting ability prone to very few unforced errors; Archie Leng (a) overcame a ‘wobble’ by clinching a vital set 7-6 after being 5-0 up and then going on to win a deciding championship tie-break; John Montgomery (g) played brilliantly against a player with a rating four levels higher, only to just lose 6-4, 7-5. The climax came right at the end with two championship tie breaks being played on next door courts with the overall result open for grabs. In their doubles, Merlin and John came back from one set down to clinch their victory with some dazzling reaction play at the net, with Archie closely following suit in his singles. An evening to remember…roll on the finals.

Jack Sutcliffe is the youngest OS to climb Everest

"Jack Sutcliffe, who left School House in 2006, became the second youngest Briton ever at twenty years old to reach the summit of Mount Everest at 4.30 am on May 24, 2009. In itself, this is an amazing achievement and a tribute to Jack’s well-known determination and ambition since he did tell his Housemaster, Peter Watts, while still at Sherborne that he would one day climb Everest. However, the nature and scale of his feat only really becomes clearer when more of the detail is known and the attached account, written by Jack with frost-bitten fingers at Base Camp, is an extraordinary description of what he went through in order to achieve his goal.
He even ends his story by saying ‘Bring on the Channel next year!’

An astonishing and humbling adventure."

International Fair 2009

International Fair
The Courts, Sherborne School, Friday 3rd July 4:15-6:15 pm

All visitors will be welcome to the 5th annual International Fair, a small but popular event organised by boys from the school and raising funds for seven charity links worldwide including Rwanda, Ecuador, South Africa, Kenya, Sri Lanka and London.

A range of refreshments are on offer including oriental appetisers, the Chaplain’s Cape Town Braai and a British tuck shop.

Other attractions include live music, a bouncy castle, face-painting and caricatures, Molke (Finnish skittles), jewellery, arts and crafts for sale, fortune telling and more.

Commem Play: Lord of the Flies

This year the Junior Company performed William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’, adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams.

All hell breaks loose when a group of evacuated British schoolboys become stranded on a deserted island when their plane crashes. With no rules or adult supervision, the boys struggle for survival and power when their childhood games quickly turn to murder and chaos.

‘Lord of the Flies’ is a powerful exploration of human nature and a chilling reminder of the barbarity and evil that lies within.

Boys Research lives of local war heroes

A group of Year 9 Sherborne pupils, working in collaboration with Sherborne Museum and the Dorset and Somerset History Society recently researched the lives of 174 soldiers whose names are inscribed on the Sherborne Town War memorial.

Around 20 pupils spent 2 weeks studying the history and collecting information on family backgrounds behind each of the names. They used resources available at the Commonwealth War Grave Commission and old copies of local paper, the Western Gazette, to piece together the lives of lost, local servicemen.

Their findings are now on display at the town Museum and there are plans to create a permanent database for public use in the museum.

Sherborne Abbey Festival

The curtain raiser for this year’s Abbey Festival was a concert given by the School’s Chamber Orchestra and some Ensembles which recently reached the semi finals of the National Pro Corda Chamber Music Competition. The programme featured solos by Oliver Longland and Edward Hughes in Bach’s Double Concerto and, as both pupils will be leaving Sherborne in July, this concert also acted as something of a swan song. The programme was as follows:

On the Saturday morning, the Sherborne Close Harmony Group gave a Recital of light music to a very full Abbey at 10.30 am. Now in its fifth year, Sherborne Close Harmony has developed something of a reputation in the Town for fine quality barber singing. The programme included a number of Beatles favourites, some songs from Robbie Williams’ Swing When You’re Winning and traditional numbers “Heavenly” and “Coney Island Baby”.

Sherborne School’s final contribution to the Abbey Festival was a concert given by The Swing and Jazz Bands at Castleton Church at 4.30 pm on Tuesday, 5th May. The church was absolutely packed with an audience who visibly felt restrained by the pews and would have preferred to dance in the aisles to the sounds of Gershwin’s “O Lady be good” and “S’Wonderful”, Glenn Miller’s “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, Ingle’s “Too much stuff” and Miles Davis’ “So what”. Many of the audience stayed behind to thank the pupils for their magnificent playing.

James Henderson, Director of Music, said, “It is a great privilege for the School to be invited to participate so fully in the magnificent Abbey Festival which includes some eminent groups such as The Sixteen. The partnership with the Abbey is a strong one and the School is very proud of its association with the Festival.”

Prep Schools Choral Day 12th May 2009

Some 180 Prep School pupils arrived in Sherborne for this year’s Choral Day. Rehearsing in the Abbey under the tuition of Director of Music James Henderson and Assistant Director of Music from The Pilgrims’ School (Winchester), Alan Quadros, the music was both challenging and new for the young choristers. Respite from their hard work was provided through organised School tours and a large lunch in the Dining Hall, followed by a further rehearsal in the afternoon and afternoon tea before Choral Evensong in the Abbey at 3.30 pm. The service was led by the Vicar of Sherborne, Canon Eric Woods with members of the Choir providing the Tenors and Basses, and a surprisingly large congregation of Senior Management from the visiting schools, parents and friends. E G Monk’s opening hymn, “Angel Voices ever Singing”, seemed entirely appropriate – as, too, was Wesley’s “Blessed be the God and Father”. As the large congregation and the choristers left the Abbey, organist Peter Bray played Widor’s rousing Toccata in F. All involved had a tremendous, though tiring, day and one pupil from Dumpton School decided that she would like Wesley’s anthem at her wedding!

The Preparatory Schools participating in the day were: Dumpton School, Port Regis, Monkton Prep, Perrott Hill, King’s Hall, All Hallows, The Pilgrims’ School and Sherborne Prep.

Director of Music James Henderson said, “This has been a most enjoyable day and I would particularly like to thank the various Directors of Music for coaching the pupils so well before the day, the Prep School Headmasters, Deputy Heads and Directors of Studies, and of course all the parents for their support and for helping to make the congregation so large. Lyon House Achieve Record Success at Ten Tors Competition 2009

"This year the Lyon House Ten Tors team had a very successful weekend finishing as a whole team. The gruelling 35 mile challenge was also completed in an exceptional time. The weather was very favourable with a cool breeze and overcast sky. They reached their 8th Tor on day one, which was a fantastic effort before finishing at 10:50am the following morning. They had come a long way from the early training sessions and pulled together as a close unit. They have learned many new skills like navigation and camp craft which I hope they will make use of in the future. The Lyon House Team had been singled out by the Army to try a new GPS tracking system and their progress was monitored closely by HQ. The results may help to secure a more sustainable future for the event itself. After an early start in the fog they eventually met the CCF 35 mile team at the 10th Tor (Oke Tor) and decided to finish together, rather than risk injury in a last minute run. A true show of sportsmanship from both sides and indeed both teams should be commended for their efforts.
The Lyon House team is thankful for the support that CCF has extended towards them and the efforts of Chris Hamon for an excellent supper and breakfast, as well as Brian Arkless for his support with kit requirements and base camp.

I do hope that next year Lyon House will be able to succeed once more.

Sherborne Cricket Team plays Kerala

At the start of the holidays 14 Shirburnians along with Messrs Reynolds, Preston and Willows went on a ten day cricket development tour of Kerala in south west India. The mix of Fifth, Fourth and Third formers, ably captained by Tom Gibbs (m) played 7 games winning 3 and losing 4. The cricket was hugely different to that played in England – we started games at 8.30 in the morning and were confronted by 36 degree heat, 80% humidity, stony, dusty outfields, baked clay wickets and passionate and talented opposition, one of whom has already been signed up by an IPL team – after being dismissed by Anthony Berkeley his contract was in the balance we hear.

The boys bonded together superbly well and made light of the conditions and the early departure of Mr Willows and his high octane wisdom. Three fifties were scored by Tom Gibbs, Arthur Chattey (f) and Dominic Scaglioni (g), whose helmet strap melted in the heat while the bowling of Charlie Fricker (e), Harry Fielder (g) and Tom Leuchars (c) impressed greatly. The two third formers David Buck (m) and Ben Nott (c) also made their Sherborne debuts with aplomb, but best of all every member of the tour party contributed significantly to the performances on the field and was a credit to Sherborne both on and off the pitch.

RocSoc Concert in the Courts

Concert in the Courts took place on Saturday evening amidst wonderful sunshine and despite some showers during the afternoon. Outstanding performances were given by “Wolf Cried Boy” and Max Radford’s band formally known as “The Bracket”, while Upper Sixth Head of RocSoc Olly Gardner’s vocal panache and guitar got the audience rocking until the Headline Band “Data Select Party” – with a combination of soul and sing-along - had the audience (over one thousand) enthralled.

Presenters George Richardson, Milo Corke, Oliver Crosthwaite-Eyre and Richard Bucklow kept the show going with witty repartee and well-timed but very corny jokes. Fergus Vardey, appearing in a shell suit, began the show with some stunning DJ work – it only being a shame that the audience started to swell after dark rather than during his daylight performance.

Grateful thanks to all involved in organisation this fantastic occasion, not least to Sue Salmon for her tireless organisation of the behind-the-scenes work.

Swine Flu Information

“The School is following the advice of the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families in the matter of swine flu, which is to carry on with school life as normal. We already have an established contingency plan to deal with such an outbreak which we will put in place following any recommendations from the Health Protection Agency should the virus spread.”

Update on 20th May 2009:

"We are continuing to keep a close eye on the situation.

We would ask all parents to remember that if you are travelling to Mexico or the USA at half-term and there are any flu-like symptoms in any members of your family during your trip you inform the Health Centre before sending your sons back to school. Should any symptoms develop after your return, please also inform the Health Centre, so that we can take steps to monitor boys in school.

This advice is equally applicable to those who come into contact whilst at home with others who have visited Mexico and the USA.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter."

Composers Concert 24th April 2009

The first Friday Lunchtime Recital of the term was the Composers’ Concert. Images of the scores were projected, using Sibelius Software, on a screen which had been put up for the occasion in Cheap Street Church; the audience, numbering some 80 enjoyed following the scores where possible, or otherwise watching pictures and movie clips which had inspired the compositions.

Talented GCSE composers included Toby Mackean (5f), Alex Macey-Dare (5b), and Anthony Pollen (5m), variously offering some fascinating serialist techniques, variations, and an original composition in the Oasis/Britpop style.

A Level musician William Smibert (U6a) presented a film score entitled “The Mist”, scored for piano and string orchestra with timpani, with much luscious writing in very romantic and sentimental style, while A Level Music Technologist Olly Gardner (U6d) presented “Moonscape” for full orchestra which had been sequenced using the extensive colour palette of Pro Tools in the Recording Suite.

James Henderson, Director of Music, thanked the appreciative audience for their support and made clear that without the sophisticated technology which the Recording Studio contains – allowing performances to be created using sampled sounds of live instruments – most of the music heard in the concert would never have been given a public airing. The event was a great success and will hopefully be repeated each year.

Sherborne Golf Triumph

Benign conditions at Burnham and Berrow Golf club greeted the Sherborne team on the first morning of the competition. Excellent practice had been done on the previous day and confidence was high in the expectation of playing Marlborough in the first round, only to find that it was Taunton as Marlborough had been scratched. Jos Pralle teed off against the home club champion and the match was well and truly started. In the end it proved a relatively easy victory for the school 4-1. In the afternoon Canford were the next opponents. In the last 14 years Sherborne had never beaten Canford. Was this the day? The determination to win was very evident from the quiet on the first tee. All players were aware of what was at stake – a place in the final. Phone messages flew from the sand dunes at Burnham to Mr Pryor in his study. It was very tight – James Trotman had lost, Jos Pralle, Charlie Leach and Zaidoon Zakaria were all involved in very tight matches and then as the round was nearing completion Robbie Busher won 4 and three with both Jos Pralle and Zaidoon Zakaria securing excellent victories to take the school to a 3-2 victory. It was very easy to see what this meant to the team.

Yet again the sun shone on the morning of the final against Cheltenham. No breakfast was taken at school as the bacon and egg baps in the club house made sure that all were fully prepared for the match. Lewis Hinch, now available to play, replaced James Trotman who had come into the team at the very last minute. As the players set off into the country MJC and MAP had to have another cup of coffee and even resisted temptation refusing another bap! A walk out to the end of the course saw the match very evenly poised with each side up in two matches with the other being all square. By the thirteenth Cheltenham were up in three matches. Charlie Leach was the first to complete his match going down 7 and 6. It was all becoming very close and tense and walking to the sixteenth green one saw a cluster of players. Jos Pralle had won 3 and 1 against the Cheltenham number one. Robbie Busher was all square and Zaidoon was dormy three up. Lewis Hinch appeared walking down the sixteenth fairway with thumbs raised, having secured a 6 and 5 victory. Sherborne was 2-1 up. Zaidoon was forced to make a very short putt to halve the hole. It was in. He did not know that it was the winning putt, but when he did elation for all. A 3-2 victory had been so well-deserved by a determined and extremely focused team.

How good it will be to see Sherborne’s name on the boards in the Golf Club after a gap of 30 years! This was the 50th playing of the tournament and only the third time that the School has been victorious.

Sherborne performs Willy Russell's Blood Brothers

The main School production this term is the studio version of ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willy Russell. The performances are Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th and Friday 13th March 2009 at 8pm in The Powell Theatre. ‘Blood Brothers’ is a powerful one act play which is both very funny and deeply moving. The play deals with the impact of social class on the lives of a single mother and her twin boys - Mickey and Eddie - in Liverpool during the 1980s and 2000s. The talented cast include girls from Sherborne Girls’ and give a performance that should not be missed.

Ofsted award Sherborne 'Outstanding School' Status

In early February a team of inspectors from Ofsted visited the school, in order to measure our boarding and pastoral care provision against the Key Standards of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools.

We are delighted to announce that the lead inspector, whose report has just been published on the Ofsted website, pronounced Sherborne School an Outstanding School. This is the highest category of commendation that Ofsted can award.

The School was judged in six categories:

• Helping children to be healthy
• Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them stay safe
• Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do
• Helping children make a positive contribution
• Achieving economic wellbeing
• Organisation (including Equality and Diversity)

The lead inspector’s summary notes that Sherborne School “is a very efficiently managed school which provides a high quality boarding provision. Boys are offered a traditional boarding experience within an environment that provides great emphasis on the spiritual, moral and cultural development of each child. Individual needs are recognised and boys are very well supported. The promotion of equality and diversity is outstanding throughout the standards inspected. Completed questionnaires from both boys and parents were generally very positive”.

In congratulating the boys, who are described by the lead inspector as “courteous, pleasant and polite” and the staff, who had worked so hard to prepare for this rigorous inspection, the Headmaster singled out Michael Weston, Deputy Head (Pastoral), because he was described by the inspection team as “the best and most efficient pastoral leader” they had come across.

RENAISSANCE MEN

Led by an acknowledged expert on the Italian Renaissance, Mrs Jo Saurin (Head of History of Art at Sherborne Girls), five Upper Sixth formers have just returned from a five-day study tour in Florence. They were in a party of Art Historians from both Sherborne and Sherborne Girls, and were treated to a veritable feast of art and architecture which will undoubtedly have helped them better to understand the requirements of their A2 module 'Florence, 1400 - 1483'.

The tour started with a close examination of the Baptistery and the Duomo, including an exhilarating climb to the top of Brunelleschi's cupola, and culminated with a visit to the Accademia to look at Michelangelo's David. In between were visits to galleries, churches and monasteries, in order to look at works by artists such as Giotto, Botticelli, Donatello and Masaccio. Other highlights were the stunning Santa Croce, San Moniato, San Marco, Santa Maria Novella, the Bargello and the Uffizi, home to the Strozzi Altarpiece, The Battle of San Romano, The Birth of Venus, Primavera and so many more.

It was not all work, however: there was also time for gelati and cappuccini, pizza and pasta in some typically Florentine restaurants and bars. None of the boys and girls will want to forget this privileged experience.

Sherborne's 1st Team wins County title

Sherborne's 1st Hockey team scored a victory against Canford in the Dorset County Cup Final earlier this month. The final tally of 3 - 1 brought the trophy back to Sherborne again after previously winning it 14 years ago.

"This performance was concise, intelligent, skilful, opportunistic, composed and diligent from the start of the game until the final whistle." said our match reporter, Charlie Garnett (U6c).

Sherborne School Hosts U11 Prep School Tournament

Prep Schools from all over the South West of England came to the largest Under 11 Mini Hockey Tournament ever held at Sherborne .

The recent resurfacing of the Upper Astroturf has given Sherborne a further two top quality playing surfaces. These facilities enabled the expansion of the event this year from 10 to 16 Schools. (See IMAGES tab on the media player for more photos of the day.)

Primary School Art Workshop

Sherborne School Art Department hosted another activity day for the four Sherborne Area Cluster Primary Schools on 13th January. Selected pupils from All Saints CEVC Primary School, Bishops Caundle; Buckland Newton School; St. Mary's CEVC Primary School, Bradford Abbas and Thornford CEVA Primary School all participated in a day of artistic endeavour. Current lower sixth student Harry Latham (a) devised the day's drawing workshop as part of his AS Level art, which involved themes evident in Renoir's painting The Umbrellas, 1881-6.

This is the fourth consecutive year Sherborne School Art Department has been host to such a successful and enjoyable day. Each alternate year the primary schools hold an exhibition of their resultant work in the Oliver Holt Gallery this year their focus will be on music and performance.

The Third Charity Dinner

Old School Room Friday 28th November 2008

An ambitious menu and a record attendance contributed to a great evening for our Michaelmas Term Charity Dinner. ‘Student Chefs’ Nick Kent-Smith (a), Merlin Goldsworthy (b), Hugo Gent (b), James Beckett (e) and Hugo Morisetti (b) were cajoled and pressured by The School’s own chefs during the term and showed their skills in producing a menu to rival any top restaurant. Their dedication was rewarded by sixty four willing customers who filled The Old School Room. The boys compiled the menu which included Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with Hollandaise Sauce, Venison fillet with a glazed shallot and red wine jus, Poussin stuffed with Wild Mushroom seasoning, Winter Berries Syllabub, Chocolate Truffle Torte and some fine local cheeses.

This ever-popular event offers some interesting experiences for Sherborne’s sixth form students and raises money for the School's adopted charities. It is hoped that already the next selected student chefs are ready to meet the challenges that next term's dinner will present them, the bar has been raised! The date for your diaries is 21st March 2009.

Michael Weston writes about a visit this half term to the first world war battlefields of Northern France.

Having visited several key battlefield sites on Vimy Ridge and in the Ypres salient, we arrived at Tyne Cot, the largest of the many Commonwealth cemeteries on the Western Front, as the sun was going down. The sky was a bright blue, the air turning chill in the early autumn.

Twenty-five boys and three members of staff stood in silence as each boy took it in turn to read out from the list of names of those Old Shirburnians who had given their lives for their country during the Great War. We laid a wreath in their memory and observed a minute’s silence.

Hamish Dudgeon (4m) also recalls the visit:

"I was struck by the sheer number of graves – the ones at the near end when we entered were spaced out and there seemed to be few, until you looked a little farther and saw the immense numbers, about 12,000 in total. Then we were informed that of that more than half of the dead were unknown. This, for me, was the most surprising fact, and looking out over the rows of graves helped bring the point home"

From Tyne Cot we went on to the town of Ypres, in order to be present at the playing of the Last Post at the Menin Gate memorial. We joined several hundreds of others for the short ceremony, during which two boys laid another wreath on behalf of the School in memory of the fallen Old Shirburnians.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Emma Robinson’s debut as the new Head of Drama was a stunning production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Set against the historical backdrop of Regency England, a talented cast captured beautifully the two worlds of the Court and the forest. The challenge with this play is to how much one chooses to interpret the drama as a dream or a nightmare. On a striking and versatile set (designed professionally by Mark Friend), Shakespeare’s verse was interpreted with freshness and clarity as the lives of Athenian youths, regal fairies and coarse ‘mechanicals’ unfolded in this tale of magic, love and passion in a dark and thrilling wood. As ever, Margaret Cracknell’s tailor-made costumes were sumptuously appropriate. Ludo Hughes (a) and Hubert Mainwaring-Burton (g) caught the eye impressively as Oberon and Puck, whilst George Day (f) captured both the endearing vulnerability and bumptious comedy of Bottom. The ensemble acting was immensely strong. On this evidence, it is clear that Sherborne Drama is entering into a new and exciting phase.

Thanks also go to the Leweston girls who played the female characters so well.

A moving visit to Rwanda

In October 2008 a group of Sherborne boys, the School Chaplain and teachers visited the REACH project in Rwanda which is one of the School's nominated charities.

The boys recount a moving and disturbing story of the genocide in 1994 and the consequences for Rwanda and its people today. Through the charity, the boys met with individuals from both Tutsi and Hutu sides who had been brought together and had been able to forgive.

The visit was also an opportunity for the boys to take part in digging foundations for a new Youth Centre and to help lay a football pitch. A piece of Sherborne turf was transported from our own 'Upper' in Sherborne to start the pitch off.

Following is one Sherborne boy's account:

The highs and lows of the Reach Rwanda trip

"On our arrival, we were met by Philbert, the director of Reach, the charity Sherborne supports. Philbert had escaped the genocide and was born in a refugee camp in 1966. When Philbert visited Sherborne in 2005, he challenged Sherborne School to raise the money for ‘The Upper’ in Rwanda; a playing field and youth centre.

Our first afternoon was spent visiting the Genocide Memorial Museum in the capital, Kigali. The museum is divided into three sections: the largest dealt with the Rwandan Genocide itself, another about genocides in general and the most disturbing one; larger than life pictures of children and facts on how they had been brutally killed. We all felt very shocked by what we saw and to witness how evil human beings can be.

The next day we visited another memorial museum in Murambi, in the very south of Rwanda. As we arrived a man and a woman came forward and told us their very moving story and accounts of what happened at the time of the Genocide. The man had been shot in the head and been left for dead but somehow survived by hiding in a school (now a memorial) underneath loads of dead bodies for days on end. When he finally had the strength he crawled away in the night into the valley. He visits the memorial almost every day because his family are buried in one of the mass graves there, and he feels he should be with them.

We were then led outside; completely unprepared for what we were about to see. There was a row of class rooms which we entered, one by one. Dead bodies (treated), skeletons (some still with clothes on the bones) were laid out. The smell was awful. The worst room of all was one filled with the remains of children and babies.

We were all very stunned and shocked by what we had just seen.

Next we visited Kayonza. This is where ‘Reach’ has been building the football pitch. Our task for the day was to dig the foundations for the Youth Centre which will be positioned next to the pitch. After about half an hour of digging, Peter Lane, Cooke, Stephen Gray, the Chaplain, Gary Shackle, Brother John and Pete the photographer and myself left Kayonza to visit some perpetrators and survivors of the Genocide and to hear their stories.

We went to the house of a woman who had been badly beaten and tortured in '94. One of her more obvious injuries was her ear, which had been cut in half. She told us how the Hutu's had come and killed all members of her extended family. Luckily her brother had escaped to Tanzania but she had been caught before she was able to get away. Then came the hardest and, what proved for us, the most emotional part of the day. Philbert called out to two large and burly men who were inside the woman’s house. We hugged them in greeting (as you do....) and shook hands. We were then told that these men were members of a group who had murdered at least a hundred members of her family. Never having knowingly met a killer, let alone a mass murderer, I found this very hard to come to terms with. We were then told about their struggle in overcoming their guilt for what they had done and how they had sought and begged for forgiveness (they had been in prison for ten years). For many years, the woman, unsurprisingly, had been unable to do this but eventually she decided that it was forgiving was the right thing to do and now they are comfortable in each others company. We later discovered that, as the killers lived 12 miles away, they had walked, the day before, to where we were and had stayed with her that night, in her home.

We then drove on to another house to talk to a former member of the government. This woman had been responsible for issuing propaganda encouraging all Hutus to kill and destroy the Tutsi “crock croaches”. She used her influence and instructed which Hutu to hunt which Tutsi. She spent 6 and half years in prison) and when released, she received help from Reach which helped her realise that what she had done was horribly wrong. She had to do many hours of community service and even though she is no longer obliged to do so, she still does.

Back to Kayonza again where we almost completed the foundations of the building – hard work and by the end of it our hands were blistered and some were bleeding.

That afternoon the official opening of the unfinished football pitch and the youth centre hall took place, attended by about 150 people. A piece of our own Upper turf (the pitch in Rwanda will be called 'The Upper, Sherborne') was then laid at the base of the plaque. It was a wonderful thought to know that now, there will always be a piece of Sherborne in Kayonza. The Chaplain also laid the corner stone of the building and our work and visit were complete.

This trip was an incredible experience for all of us; one which will never be forgotten."

New Deputy Head (Academic) Appointment

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Simon Henderson as the new Deputy Head (Academic) in succession to Mark Waldron, who goes on to be Headmaster of the English College in Prague in 2009.

Mr Henderson is an Oxford History graduate who taught at the Windsor Boys' School before joining Eton in 2001. He has been Head of Department since 2005 and he also ran the Eton Soccer 1st XI as well as coaching hockey and cricket. He is married to Ali and they have a baby son, Charlie.

Steven Lawn Memorial Lecture

On Friday 3rd October, Sherborne School was proud to welcome Sir Jeremy Greenstock who delivered The Steven Lawn Memorial Lecture.

Sir Jeremy Greenstock was a British diplomat from 1969-2004. He was Her Majesty’s Special Representative in Iraq having succeeded Sir John Weston (OS) as British Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, a post which he held when the Twin Towers were destroyed in 2001.

The Steven Lawn Lecture is designed to perpetuate Steven’s name. He was in The Digby boarding house at Sherborne School from 1987-1991 and was working in his office in the World Trade Centre when the planes hit on 11th September 2001.

Previous speakers have been Lord Butler, Lord Douglas Hurd, General Patrick Cordingly, Terry Waite and Camilla Batmanghelidjh. The remit is to talk about International Relations and possibly Terrorism but each speaker is encouraged to treat the lecture in their own way.

Swing Band 'wows' in Grenada

The Swing Band travelled to the Caribbean and toured Grenada between 29th June and 7th July. Departing early in the morning after the leavers' ball, the band played six concerts whilst on the island, featured in two live television interviews on "Good morning Grenada" (which included the programme's theme music being replaced by Will Leith's saxophone improvisations on I got rhythm), and raised nearly £5000 for St James's home for orphans (Grenada) through generous givings from the audiences at the concerts. Evening concerts took place in True Blue, the Rex Grenadian, La Source, Grenada Boys' Secondary School (which involved playing alongside pupils in school and members of the band coaching them prior to the concert) and the band was also invited to play for the Graduation Dinner at Westmorland Girls’ College.

Between concerts the band rehearsed up to three hours each day before enjoying snorkelling, swimming, sailing and the Caribbean sun in general. The musical standard achieved in concerts was extremely high, with all-time favourites Soul Bossa Nova (Quincy Jones) and Pennsylvania 6-5000 (Glenn Miller) being encored many times. A cricket match against the hotel staff was a highlight of the tour, with Sherborne Swing Band lagging just a little behind on the score.

Trip to France & Belgium Oct 2008

In the Michaelmas half term break a group of Fourth and Fifth form boys travelled to France and Belgium. Richard Oates, Head of French, updated an online blog throughout their time abroad.

"The trip complements the GCSE French language course as well as touching on aspects of European history, art, politics and geography. Our purpose in offering this opportunity to visit two neighbouring European countries is to compare various aspects of two neighbouring countries which, though they each possess distinctive cultures, are linked by rather more than some people may imagine. We will be based in Lille in northern France and will pay visits, on successive days, to Paris and Brussels. On our last full day we will undertake a tour of some World War I battlefields, finishing the day at the moving Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres."

Sherborne at the Edinburgh Festival

Under the guidance of director-in-residence Bart Lee and theatre manager Jim Donnelly, Sherborne School staged an absurdist play about plays at this year's Edinburgh Festival. The Actor's Nightmare, a comedy by Christopher Durang gained three stars from the Sunday Times Festival reviewer Christopher Hart (see here). Hart says:

"...it was enthusiastically acted by the boys under Lee's professional direction..."

The production finished on 9 August after a run of 8 nights. It was first performed earlier in the year in the Powell Theatre and the cast included Henry Comyn (d), Laurie Blair (b), Tom Oxenham (c), Ludo Hughes (a) and Hubert Mainwaring-Burton (g).

Proposed New Music School

Every Shirburnian is taught music as a core subject from the start of his career, and more than 50% of the 570 boys study at least one instrument per week.

"The new Music School is an exciting project which will be a clear statement of the School's commitment to music, and which will ensure that music-making at Sherborne continues to be at the leading edge of independent schools' music in England. For the first time since the 1960s, Sherborne's music will be under one roof and yet the modern sound-proofing will enable proper individual work to be carried out by teachers and pupils alike."

The existing accommodation was not designed specifically for music teaching, rehearsal or performance, and sound-proofing is generally poor. This means that conditions for teaching are cramped and equipment has to be moved regularly. Despite this, Sherborne has an excellent and diverse musical output. However, the department struggles to be cohesive and its growing popularity demands the use of several disparate buildings.

The proposed Music School comprises a single, state-of-the-art, purpose built centre including a recital room to seat 120, a recording suite and a range of group and individual teaching and practice rooms. All will be fully sound-proofed and ideal for music. The building will also be available for public performances and other events. It could be made available to local schools and should prove to be of major benefit to the wider Dorset community.

Having already secured gifts and pledges totalling £2.35m, the Sherborne School Foundation hopes that as many OS, parents and friends of the School as possible will be able to contribute towards the remaining £150,000 and become a part of this landmark project for Sherborne.

Sir Ian McKellen at Sherborne

At the end of the Lent Term, Sherborne School proudly welcomed Sir Ian McKellen who graced the School for a full day. He ran an exclusive masterclass on acting for four boys and then gave an audience to six hundred boys, parents and staff who packed the Big School Room. Sir Ian spoke brilliantly about his stage life and career. He then allowed the boys to freely ask questions in an open forum.

One boy asked ‘Who would be the victor in a battle between Gandalf and Magneto?’ to which Sir Ian answered that, of course, it would have to be Gandalf as ‘good’ always triumphs over ‘evil’.

Sir Ian is perhaps now best known for his role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy; however, he has enjoyed a long and varied career on screen and stage. He has just finished playing the lead role in King Lear in New Zealand.

Rugby Tour to South Africa

Sherborne School's senior rugby players embarked on a 16 day tour of South Africa in late July. The tour consisted of two teams (an U16 & U17 team), 45 players and 5 members of staff with a tour physio accompanying the party.

The tour proved to be a resounding success both on and off the pitch as the boys earned a very respectable 5 wins from their 10 matches played, coupled with some very narrow defeats. The results were as follows:

The tour was equally successful off the pitch as the boys had the opportunity to sample many of the delights that South Africa has to offer. Based in Cape Town for the first 5 days of the tour, the boys saw Table Mountain, Robben Island learning about Nelson Mandela’s history, the Cape Peninsula and the humbling sights of the Langa township.

The party then headed along the beautiful Garden Route via Route 62 and its breathtaking scenery before arriving at George where the boys trained in the International 7s Stadium before taking in a Currie Cup match in the afternoon. The tour party visited the impressive Cango Caves, rode ostriches at the Ostrich Farms at Oudtshoorn and dived with alligators and posed for photos with leopards at the Cango Wildlife Park. The journey then took us further along the Eastern Cape to Plettenburg Bay and an impromptu spot of whale watching, to Knysna where we had a tour of the estuary before finally arriving at Port Elizabeth.

The tour concluded with a flight to Johannesburg from where we headed North to the Mabula Game Reserve for 2 game drives and some well earned R & R at the end of a fantastic tour for all those who went.

Abbeylands Play 'South Pacific'

Abbeylands' House Play in the Michaelmas term was a musical for the first time in many years: 'South Pacific'. The production lived up to its promise of an evening of outstanding entertainment. Over 20 boys were in the cast and 20 more backstage.

Mr Mark Waldron (Deputy Head Academic) and Mr James Henderson (Director of Music) worked extremely hard producing this spectacular house musical. Thanks also go to the girls from Leweston who played the female parts.

Boys forge surfing friendships with Kids Co

The 2010 group of Kids Company boys with pupils from Sherborne, Polzeath.

Towards the end of the Trinity Term the school looked to build on the link that we established last year with Kids Company in London. A series of fundraising events run throughout the Lent term helped to finance a trip to Polzeath in North Cornwall for six young people from the London centres together with their support staff. Kids Company was set up by Camila Batmanghelidjh (an Old Girl of Sherborne Girls School). The Kids Company centres provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children. Boys and staff from Sherborne met a wonderfully enthusiastic group from Kids Company from the train before we set off to Cornwall in the sunshine with the aim of taking a break to make time to learn more about each other and to develop friendships.

The weather was spectacular and on Friday night the boys and staff played football on the huge expanse of low-tide smooth sand. Play was only interrupted by the need to stand and watch the sun as it sank into the sea. The community in Polzeath did a wonderful job of supporting this initiative and we were particularly grateful to the Animal Surf School who provided surfing equipment and tuition and arranged rooms for us in the Atlantic Hotel overlooking the bay.

At 8:30am the following morning we all met at the top of the beach to get fitted out with wetsuits and surfboards before heading out for our first surf lesson. This first lesson was followed up by a second after lunch which soon had us all on our feet riding the waves. Tired and exhausted we found rest in the 'Sandbar Restaurant' who put together hearty meals for the group. Our support of England who were playing their first match in the World Cup helped bring the group together. Afterwards we found the time and energy for more beach football, as there was still light in the sky at 10:30pm!

After a slightly later morning lesson on Sunday, we packed up and headed back to Sherborne, saying good-bye to the staff and boys from Kids Company at the station. With Facebook addresses exchanged and warm embraces we had all gained much from spending such a magical weekend together and are now making plans to broaden this important link further next year.

Patrick Shelley Music Prize 2010

The last musical event ever to take place in the Old Music School was yesterday afternoon. Welcoming Richard Dickins, a conductor and currently Director of Music at Imperial College London, to adjudicate the Patrick Shelley Competition, the OMS Recital Room hosted five instrumental classes and a number of tremendous performances. The instrumental competition ran smoothly thanks to the outstanding accompanying skills of Jenny Coultas and Benjamin Davey - with James Ottaway accompanying the singers.

The Competition started with the strings and Alistair Hughes’ accurate and greatly musical performance of Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei was adjudged the winner. In the Piano class Richard Dickins commended Oliver Toomey for playing his own arrangement of Fats Waller’s jazz classic Honeysuckle Rose, including improvisation, although it wasn’t enough to beat George Buckingham, who won with his performance of Debussy’s La Cathedrale Engloutie, played from memory and with great composure. George Chattey’s performance of the first two movements of Burton’s Sonatina for Flute brought great compliments from the adjudicator as he won the Woodwind class and claimed the Patrick Shelley Music Cup for the best performance overall. The playing of Hold’s Tango on the Saxophone by Cosimo Malizia also highly commended. The competition continued with the Brass section in which Toby Cairns and Jack Lewis were commended for their performances of Strauss’ Concerto No 1, 1st Movt on the Horn and Sonata for Trombone, 4th Movt by Bourgeois respectively. But Max Radford won this section with his trumpet, performing Hubeau’s Spiritual beautifully. Finally a very strong Singing class got underway and after a number of very accomplished singers Richard Dickins named Benjamin Craw the winner for his performance of Mendelssohn’s O God Have Mercy.

In winning the Patrick Shelley Cup for the second year running George Chattey is continuing the tradition of annual competitive musical excellence in memory of one of Sherborne’s most loved and respected Director of Music, Patrick Shelley. George may be heard again in the Music Festival at the end of this week, while the brand new purpose-built Music School is being opened on Friday.

A Levels Results 2010

‘One of the best years ever for boys at Sherborne’

Sherborne School announced excellent A level and IB results. 80% of grades were A* - B with a quarter of the whole year group achieving at least one A*. 30 boys have achieved 3 As or more or its IB equivalent.

’I am thrilled that my final set of A level and IB results are among the very best Sherborne has produced in the ten years that I have been here, ‘ says retiring Headmaster Simon Eliot. ‘The overall figures are very pleasing and I would like to congratulate both the boys and their teachers on their achievements. In particular, I am delighted that my last two Heads of School, Edward Bonnell and Jamie Burke, have sailed into Oxford to read History and Classics respectively.’

This is the third year that Sherborne has offered the choice of A levels or IB at sixth form. Simon Henderson, Deputy Head (Academic), comments ‘I am especially happy to see the success of our boys who took the International Baccalaureate, where on average they achieved UCAS points equivalent to 1 A* and 3 A grades at A level. Two boys, Thomas Gilbert and Jack Nott-Bower, achieved results which exceeded 5 A grades at A level. The IB provides an excitingly rich educational experience and these results show that the boys have met the academic challenge head-on and flourished as a result.’

Strong GCSE Results at Sherborne

Boys have achieved a strong set of GCSE results with more than 80% of grades at A* - B and over a quarter of all papers graded A*. Results were especially strong in Biology, English Language, Geography, Latin and Greek (where more than a third of boys gained A*s), in Modern Languages (where A*s were achieved by over a quarter of boys), and in Art which recorded close to 90% A*s.

‘I would like to congratulate the boys on their success which reflects an enormous amount of hard work by both boys and staff,’ comments Chris Davis, Headmaster.

Veterrimi IV Rugby Festival

The four oldest school rugby clubs in the world - Cheltenham College, Durham School, Rugby School and Sherborne School - will meet at Durham School on Saturday 23 October to celebrate the origins of rugby football. In the morning the four schools will play in a "round robin" tournament. In the afternoon the bottom two teams will play off for the "wooden spoon" and the top two teams will contest the final for the Veterrimi IV trophy.

New School Chaplain Licensing Service

On Sunday 19 September, the School's newly-appointed Chaplain, the Reverend Lindsay Collins, was licensed in a special service in Sherborne Abbey. The whole school and a large number of the Chaplain's friends and family saw and heard her give her commitment to care for both boys and staff over the coming months and years. The Bishop of Sherborne, the Right Reverend Dr Graham Kings, presided over the service and preached the sermon; and in an impromptu address the Chaplain thanked boys and staff for the warmth of their welcome, the generosity of their spirit and the excellence of their hymn-singing!

23rd National Inter Schools One Day Event

Harry Lane on Jonny the Spy

For the first time ever, Sherborne put forward a team for the ISODE at Stonar. We entered the BE 80 class, as two members of the team were calling on borrowed horses in order to compete. Team members were: Oliver Coombe-Tennant (L6e), Harry Lane (5b) and Rory Featherstone (4f).

Rory, the youngest member of the team, making his debut representing Sherborne, produced an outstanding performance in all three phases to take 4th place in Section B on the 19 year old mare, Dark Star. An excellent dressage score, with a clear show-jumping round was followed by a clear cross-country round, with only a few time penalties to add to his dressage score. Harry and Ollie both had one show-jumping fence down after solid performances in the dressage phase. Harry produced an excellent clear cross-country round on Jonny the Spy, finishing 8th in Section A. Ollie was unlucky to have three stops cross country on the less experienced young horse, Reybridge Ryley. Ryley belongs to Ollie's brother, and whilst the final score was a little disappointing for Ollie, he and Ryley worked well together to bring home the team safely. Well done to all three team members.

The Bombing of Sherborne School 30th September 1940

Craters in the Courts 30th September 1940

Exactly 70 years ago, at about 4.30pm on Monday 30th September 1940, the Battle of Britain came most unexpectedly to Sherborne. About 150 German bombers, whose target was almost certainly the military aircraft factory at Westlands in Yeovil, dropped several hundred bombs on Sherborne after being intercepted by RAF fighters commanded by an Old Shirburnian. He wrote later that he was horrified to see bombs falling on 'the old school courts which I knew so well.'

Incredibly, there were no casualties in the school, where boys and staff were in afternoon lessons, and damage to school property was relatively slight. However, the town was not so fortunate. 18 people were killed, including several children (one a recent evacuee from London), and 31 properties were demolished and over 700 damaged.

All My Sons School Drama Production

This year's Main School Production is 'All My Sons' by Arthur Miller. World War II is over and a family, mourning a son missing in action, plants a memorial tree and tries to go on with their own lives. A storm blows down the tree and a devastating family secret is uprooted, setting the characters on a terrifying journey towards truth.

The performances are at 7.30pm in the Powell Theatre on Thursday 2nd, Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th December. There will be no charge for tickets which can be collected on the door on the night of the performance.

Wainwright Prize 2010 won by Sherborne Pupil

Sherborne is proud to announce that Ben Craw (U6d) has been awarded the The University of Oxford's 2010 G.A. Wainwright Schools Essay Prize. This competition focuses on Near Eastern Archaeology.

Ben's essay centred on the fundamental question of whether the Exodus did indeed happen. But interwoven into this was the notion that the chronology of the time might be 350 years out. Ben therefore looked for archaeological evidence in both possible chronological time periods and concluded that the Exodus probably did not happen but represents the general movement of Asiatics away from Egypt to Biblical Canaan.

Sherborne Boy 4th in Modern Pentathlon

Sherborne pupil, Harry Lane (5b) finished 4th overall in the Youth B (ages 15/16) 30th Whitgift Sea Lions Modern Pentathlon earlier this month. The three boys ahead of him had previously represented GB in youth competitions. The Modern Pentathlon involves: Riding, Fencing, Swimming, Running and Shooting.

Harry is very pleased with his achievement and 'fired up to contnue his improvement after this success.'

Sherborne School Choral Society numbers some 300 singers, consisting of members of the local Sherborne community who have sung with the Choir for several years, the boys of Sherborne School and girls of Sherborne Girls. Conducted by James Henderson, the Director of Music at Sherborne School, the Choral Society will be accompanied by a professional orchestra in Rossini's Stabat Mater and Puccini's Messa di Gloria. Both pieces are extremely operatic, with many dramatic arias being sung by soloists Natasha Jouhl, Louise Poole, John McMunn and William Townend: in particular, the most famous aria in the Rossinni involves a top C for the Italianate Tenor in an extremely rousing number. Puccini's Mass shares music with the composer's opera Manon Lescaut and will appeal to opera lovers equally as much as to those who enjoy large scale choral works.

Davis Newton has an international reputation as a jazz pianist with a large number of albums to his name. Growing up in Renfrewshire, Scotland, he had a musical upbringing with the piano trio sound of Peterseon, Tatum or Garner played daily in his home. After graduating from Leeds Colege of Music in 1979, David teamed up with saxophonist Alan Barnes, moving to London where he rapidly became a much sought after pianist after playing with guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller.

Having recorded with Buddy de Franco and Martin Taylor, Newton and Barnes worked for 'Concorde Label' agent Barry Hatcher and made several recordings. Later in the 90's David made a reputation for himself as an accompanist for singers Tina May, Claire Martin and Stacey Kent, with whom he spent the next ten years recording and travelling all over the world. The recent CD 'Portrait of a Woman' establishes a new musical freedom for the Trio with David leading as arranger and composer. He was voted the best jazz pianist in the British Jazz Awards for the 8th time in 2008 and was made a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003. Together with bassist Dave Chamberlain and drummer Sebastian de Krom, David will lead a masterclass of pupils from 4.30pm and then a concert at 7.30pm.

Sebastian Faulks films at Sherborne School

Last year Sherborne School had the pleasure of welcoming Sebastian Faulks and a BBC crew to film part of the series 'Faulks on Fiction' which is to be screened in four parts starting this Saturday 5th February on BBC2. Click here for BBC site.

Faulks says "To me, the only people who matter are the characters; the heroes, lovers, snobs and villains, people whose inner lives we get to know so well that they're more familiar to us than our own families and friends - so much so that it's in the power of their experiences that we see our own lives in a new light."

During the visit to Sherborne, Faulks filmed and took part in a classroom discussion on Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for the episode focusing on 'Villains'; At that time, Sherborne was also staging a performance of the play of which Sebastian Faulks watched excerpts and discussed the characters with the cast.

Appointment of Head of Rugby

Paul Miles, Director of Sport, is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr David Guy as Head of Rugby. He will join the School from the Trinity Term. "David has an excellent background in the sport and we are fortunate to have him join the School. David will continue with the development of rugby at Sherborne."

Currently Head of Boys' Games and 1st XV Coach at Hymers College in Hull, David has recently been appointed as Coach to the England U16B Rugby squad. Mr Guy is also the current North of England Lead Coach, and takes up his new position after the U16 Divisional Festival at Broadstreet Rugby Club in Coventry, from which the England squads are selected. He will then work with his national squad to prepare for the International Festival at Wellington College, Berkshire during the Easter holiday, against teams which include Scotland, France, Portugal, Italy, Canada and Belgium.

Sherborne to represent England at Schools Six Nations

The School is proud to announce that Sherborne has been invited to represent England in the inaugural Six Nations Schools' Rugby Tournament being held at London Scottish as part of the Calcutta Cup Weekend Festival on March 11 - 13.

According to the website run by London Scottish "Ten elite schools with a proud rugby tradition will be participating in the inaugural Powder Byrne Schools Six Nations tournament. The schools competing for this prestigious title come from all of the six nations and include well known Scottish institutions Merchiston Castle and Fettes, who have been selected as the representatives from Scotland."

The tournament will run over the entire weekend, with the final scheduled to be held on the Sunday, immediately prior to the Legends Game. It will provide a great opportunity to witness the cream of schools rugby from across Europe, as well as a fantastic opportunity for old-boys and girls from each school to reunite and provide vocal support to their alma mater! Abigail Norfleet James visits Sherborne

Abigail Norfleet James visited Sherborne for three days to talk to staff, parents and visiting Prep School Heads about the science and art of teaching boys. Based in the USA, Abigail is a regular speaker in the US and around the world and a keen advocate of single sex boys' schools - particularly boarding.

Her fascinating talks touched on why boys and girls do not learn in the same fashion and gave practical information for helping boys succeed in and out of the classroom. Simon Henderson, Deputy Head (Academic) says "I particularly wanted Abigail to come to Sherborne as we are forever looking for more effective teaching methods for the boys here, as well as deepening our understanding of their pastoral needs. I thought that Abigail's knowledge and passion would engage teachers and parents alike in helping them provide the boys with the tools to thrive at both home and school." Headmaster Chris Davis was delighted to receive these comments from an Abbey House mother "I just wanted to say the lecture on Saturday was fascinating - I arrived a sceptic, but felt very informed when I left!"

Sherborne's Writer in Residence and English teacher, Tom Payne, was interviewed this morning on the Today Programme on the day of publishing his latest book - a translation of Ovid's 'Ars Amatoria' (The Art of Love).

"The ancient Romans didn't have Valentine's Day, but if they had, the Latin poet Ovid would have been the perfect guide to it. He wrote his comprehensive guides for lovers, The Art of Love and The Cures for Love, between 2BC and AD2. His elegant verse tells men and, eventually, more briefly, women, everything they need to know about finding a lover, staying in a relationship, and, if it should go sour, how to pull yourself together."

Tom is also a literary critic for the Telegraph.

Deputy Head (Academic) Appointment

Dr David Smith

Sherborne is excited to announce the appointment of Dr David Smith as the new Deputy Head (Academic) as of September 2011.

Following a first degree from the University of Wales and post graduate research at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, David started his teaching career at The Leys School, Cambridge, before moving to Sevenoaks School in Kent where, as Head of History for five years, he led a large team of historians teaching and examining both A Level and the International Baccalaureate. Leading many international history trips David believes strongly in the importance of getting students out into the field to fully explore their subject.

While at Sevenoaks, David completed his doctoral thesis with the University of London on British Politics, and was also a Housemaster for eight years, living with his family at the heart of a boarding community of 60 sixth-form international students. Since 2007 David has been Head of History at Stowe School. He is married to Ann who teaches at the prep school attended by their four children. Away from the demands of school, David and his family enjoy escaping to their house in the Cotswolds and are much looking forward to moving to Sherborne this summer.

Wind Band at the Millennium Centre Cardiff

The Wind Band was invited to perform in the Welsh Millennium Centre in Cardiff, and enjoyed playing Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, James Bond Themes and Chicago to an audience of over 500. Commenting on the performance of the Band after its early afternoon recital, the Head of Arts for Wales was greatly impressed by the large number of very musical students involved with the Band - and in particular by the heavy Brass Section.

Congratulations to Andrew Fawbert (Head of Brass) and Clare Jackson (Head of Woodwind) on their training of the Wind Band, which this year numbers some 73 players. Having last term played for the opening of the Christmas decorations at Clark's Village in Street, the Band is now looking forward to the Gala Concert as part of the Commem celebrations in July.

Strings Day at Sherborne

On Sunday 6th March a Strings Day organised on behalf of the European Strings Teachers' Association (ESTA) was hosted at the school. 100 pupils from 20 local schools were involved in intensive coaching sessions led by Martin Smith (London Mozart Players and the Academy of St Martin's-in-the-Fields) and Sarah Drury (Head of Strings at Sherborne). The repertoire for the afternoon included Vaughan Williams Concerto Grosso for Three Orchestras, giving ample scope for players of differing standards to come together for a concert in the BSR at 4.30 pm which was attended by a large number of parents.

Sherborne School Chamber Orchestra (led by Harry Fielder), which will be undertaking a concert tour to Venice in July with the Concert Orchestra, was also involved with the Strings Day and contributed much to the musical quality of the occasion - younger members of the orchestras enjoyed the opportunity to play alongside the more proficient and experienced players.

Many of the parents and students involved with the day were impressed by the superb new music school which opened last summer. Further details of the new building, and its fleet of brand new pianos and state-of-the-art recording studio are available here.

Sherborne Rugby 1st XV at Six Nations

At the inaugural Schools Six Nations 10 a-side competition in Richmond this weekend Sherborne U18's acquitted themselves most admirably in a festival of rugby which began at 11am on Friday and reached its conclusion yesterday prior to the England Scotland Calcutta cup match.

Following a live group draw our senior side played faultlessly to beat the Welsh and then battled hard throughout the Friday and Saturday to qualify 3rd in the group and set up a semi-final against Portora Royal School. After another superb performance we set up an England Scotland Plate final against Merchiston.

In the rain at Richmond our team, led superbly by Toby Mackean and Harry Plastow, came back from 10-0 down to draw 10-10 at full time. In the following 12 minutes of 'golden points' extra time I have honestly never seen a more determined, brave and composed Sherborne side put their bodies on the line. A cruel penalty was awarded against Sherborne and the successful drop kick made it 13-10 to Merchiston. Gutting way to decide an entirely even contest. At least England won!

My thanks to all the boys (pictured above) who made this happen and to Paul Miles for organising it. So too the many parents, siblings and old boys who came to support over the 3 days; your efforts are always appreciated.

Sacconi String Quartet Residency and Masterclass

Sacconi Quartet masterclass: coaching the piano trio

The internationally famous "Sacconi Quartet" was in residence at the Tindall Recital Hall from 9th-11th March. The quartet visited both Sherborne primary schools during their residency and also conducted a three hour masterclass with Sherborne School boys, affording the opportunity for two of the school's chamber groups who have reached the Semi-Finals of the national Pro Corda Chamber Music Competition to be coached by world-class players. Both the piano trio (Theodore Irvine - piano, David Leach - violin, Alistair Hughes - cello) and the string quartet (Harry Fielder & James Lello - violins, Ben Craw - viola, Alistair Hughes- cello) were extremely inspired by the afternoon's coaching which included many demonstrations by the Sacconi Quartet.

On Thursday evening the Sacconi Quartet performed to a packed Tindall Recital Hall as part of the new professional recital series open to the public. The programme included Dvorak's Quartet in F, Op 96 (The American) and Beethoven's stunning Quartet in C, Op 59 no 3 (Razumovsky) and, in addition to superlative playing by the quartet, many in the audience were astounded by the recital hall's superb acoustic in which the musical detail of every phrase is perfectly audible anywhere in the auditorium. The recital hall is fully equipped with the latest recording facilities and is showing much promise as a professional recording venue outside school terms.

Joint Schools' Symphony Orchestra at Sheldonian, Oxford

Joint Schools' Orchestra at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford.

The joint schools' Symphony Orchestra spent the weekend of 19 & 20 March in Oxford, rehearsing in the Sheldonian Theatre for a concert on Sunday afternoon at 4.30 pm and, amongst other sight-seeing trips, taking an open-top bus tour of the city and the university. The orchestra, drawn from Sherborne School, Sherborne Girls, The Gryphon and Leweston, attended Choral Evensong at Christ Church on Saturday where they were given a very warm welcome by the Precentor, Revd John Paton (formerly a Deacon at Sherborne Abbey) before spending an evening in the night lights of the city of sleeping spires.

The concert on Sunday began with two performances by the Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Head of Strings Sarah Drury) - Variations on "Greensleeves", arranged by Upper Sixth former Ben Craw, and the first movement of Vivaldi's Concerto in B minor for Four Violins, Op 13 No 10. Strong performances were given by the four soloists - Harry Fielder (leader of both the Chamber and the Symphony Orchestra), Cannes Wong, Sandy May and David Leach. Sandy May appeared again later in the concert as the organ soloist in Saint-Saëns' third symphony.

The first and last movements of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony provided a dramatic start to the Symphony Orchestra's performances, conducted by James Henderson. Whilst the first movement is famous for its four note iconic motif - sometimes thought to have been representative of "Fate" knocking at the door - it was performed here, rather unusually, with added parts for trombones and tubas. The drama of the opening, intensified with the additional brass, was sustained throughout the movement and into the last Allegro which is only a little less well known. Classic FM favourite Rodeo, by Aaron Copland, followed and provided much opportunity for the percussion section of five players. The conclusion to the concert was a fiery performance of the final movement of Saint-Saëns' Symphony no 3 in C minor, played with gusto and flair, though it was interesting to note that the organ in the Sheldonian had significantly less presence than that which is in Sherborne Abbey!

Diploma Recitals

Alistair Hughes (cello) and Jack Lewis (trombone) gave outstanding diploma recitals, accompanied by Jenny Coultas, on Friday evening. Commenting on the performances of both musicians, Director of Music James Henderson said: Sherborne is proud to have not one but two pupils taking their ALCM diplomas in April. This evening's recital, which was a performance of the recitals which will be repeated for the diploma in April, was a breath-taking display of what is musically possible when a young musician gives great commitment, dedication and hard work to developing his ability on an instrument: both Alistair and Jack are very talented musicians but these stunning performances were also the result of many hours of individual practice. We are indeed fortunate at Sherborne to have such a first-rate team of visiting music teachers, with Fiona Murphy (cello) and Andrew Fawbert (trombone and Head of Brass) having contributed enormously to the success of these two young musicians.

Sherborne School Chamber Orchestra at the Abbey Festival 2011

This year's Sherborne Abbey Festival was opened on Friday 29th April with a performance given by Sherborne School Chamber Ensembles. With success in the National Pro Corda Chamber Music Competition still very recent, when the string quartet and the piano trio reached the semi-finals, both ensembles were in fine form for performances of Mendelssohn and Haydn (as below). A more local flavour was added when Upper Sixth form pupil Ben Craw conducted a performance of his own arrangement of Greensleeves with the Chamber Orchestra, which in turn was followed by Vivaldi's concerto for four violins (soloists Harry Fielder, David Leach, James Lello and Sandy May) conducted by Head of Strings Sarah Drury. Finally the Brass Ensemble gave a telling performance of Susato with Toby Mackean (horn) as the soloist in the third movement. As curtain-raisers for the Abbey Festival go, this was certainly amongst the best.

Sherborne School Chamber Orchestra

A new addition to the Abbey Festival saw the Jazz Band, directed by Anthony Ingle, performing an hour long recital in the Tindall Recital Hall. Despite taking place during the festivities surrounding the Royal Weddding, the audience was of a good size and there was no doubt that the music was enjoyed by all: amongst the many numbers written by the band's director were also some Ellington classics such as "I'm beginning to see the light". Felix Stickland, Anthony Pollen and Oliver Toomey later appeared again the Festival as the trio performing for the Patrons' Drinks Party, this year held in the Atrium of the Music School.

The Close Harmony Group

A highlight of the school's contribution to the Abbey Festival has for the last few years been the Close Harmony Recital in the Abbey at 10.30 am on the Saturday morning. This year's large and appreciative audience on Saturday 30th May were treated to an unusually broad repertoire: amongst some Barbershop classics there were also arrangements for tenors and basses of sacred music by Palestrina and Lotti. The recital started with some very polished performances of music by Palestrina, conducted by Upper Sixth form pupil Ben Craw. Some particularly effective 1st tenor singing from Robert Folkes, William Glass and Joseph Hewetson carried the top line effectively and many afterwards commented upon the wonderful sound and the effectiveness of this music when sung by young voices. There followed a performance of a complete mass by Lotti, conducted by Lower Sixth form pupil William Ellis. This, too, showed the small choral ensemble's quality to best advantage in a three part texture of polyphonic and homophonic beauty.

Traditional barbershop fare surrounded some lively arrangements of well known jazz classics, some of which were accompanied by Organ Scholar Richard Dawson on the piano, and an unusual arrangement of "Lollipop" finished the recital and - to resounding applause - was performed again as an encore.

Silent Movie Improvisation of the 1927 film "Phantom of the Opera"

David Bednall is a busy composer and organist, combining an extensive freelance career with the position of Sub Organist at Bristol Cathedral, PhD Studies in Composition with Dr John Pickard at the University of Bristol and Directorship of the University Singers. He studied with Dr Naji Hakim and David Briggs and between 2002 and 2007 was at Wells Cathedral, initially as Sub Organist and then as Assistant Organist. As well as the daily services he accompanied the choirs for concerts and on radio and television broadcasts. He also made a number of recordings with the Cathedral Choir and Chamber Choir on the Hyperion, Regent, Lammas and Priory labels.

David was educated at Sherborne and Queen's College, Oxford, where he was Organ Scholar. He was a prize-winner in Improvisation and Performance at the examination for Fellow of The Royal College of Organists in 2002, and has given recitals at L'Église de La Trinité, Paris, Westminster and St Paul's. Additional engagements have included recitals at Westminster Abbey, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and various performances of Vierne - Symphonies IV and V. In June 2008 he gave a recital at Notre-Dame de Paris. With Wells Cathedral Choir under Matthew Owens David has recorded a critically acclaimed CD of his choral music entitled Hail, gladdening light for Regent Records. It was Editor's Choice in Gramophone magazine. Additionally a number of his works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4. Recent work has included Missa Sancti Pauli commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral for the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music, a Magnificat and Nunc dimittis premiered on BBC Radio 3 by Wells Cathedral Choir, and a set of evening canticles for Sherborne School Choir.

Gordon Curtis is a clarinettist currently studying at Trinity College of Music, London. He is taught by the World renowned Spanish clarinet player, Joan-Enric Lluna. Whilst Gordon was a pupil at Sherborne School, he was invited to be a soloist with the Elgar Chamber Orchestra under Stephen Bell, performing Weber's Second Clarinet Concerto in E Flat Major, Op.74.

After joining Trinity College of Music in 2007, he has won The Wilfred Hambleton Clarinet Competition (2009), performed with all their major ensembles as principal clarinet including TCM Symphony Orchestra, and TCM Chamber Orchestra in the UK Premiere of Leo Brouwer's Fifth Guitar Concerto, as well as recording Alan Hovaness's Symphony No.23 for Naxos.

He has also performed with the International Student's Symphony Orchestra, St Paul's Sinfonia, and has been appointed Principal Clarinet for Vocal Motions Elastic Theatre with Artistic Director Jacek Scarso, which performed at the Tete a Tete Opera Festival at Riverside Studios in 2010.

First Prize Winners of the 2008 Royal Overseas League Competition, the Brodowski Quartet are 'the new kids on the London scene' (The Times). The quartet members, originating from Germany, Wales, Scotland and England, are currently based in London where they are recipients of the Richard Carne Fellowship for Chamber Ensembles at Trinity College of Music, where last year they held the Bulldog Scholarship for String Quartet. They are also currently Associate Artists at the Anvil Concert Hall in Basingstoke.

The Quartet won the Second Prize at the 2009 Gaetano Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition in Italy, also winning the Special Award of Artists in Residence for 2010. The Quartet was selected as Park Lane Group Young Artists for 2008, giving a critically acclaimed recital at the Purcell Room in London. In 2007 they were winners of the Val Tidone International Chamber Music Competition in Italy and were also prize winners in the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition in the Netherlands broadcast live on Radio 4 Netherlands.

ATCL Music Diplomas achieved by two Sherborne boys

Two Sherborne pupils have achieved their ATCL diplomas. Jack Lewis (trombone) and Alistair Hughes (cello) achieved extremely high marks - Alistair Hughes additionally gaining a Distinction. James Henderson, Director of Music, commented, "This is a tremendous achievement for both pupils. We are all delighted for them both and also very grateful to Head of Keyboard Jenny Coultas who has spent many hours individually coaching them and rehearsing them for the examination recitals - and also for accompanying them on the day."

All Stars Wow Salcombe Festival

The Swing Band has received great accolades following its recent performances in Salcombe. Appearing in the Island Street Bar on the Friday of the May Bank Holiday weekend in various small combo groups under the "All Stars" name, the 24 piece band went on to open the Salcombe Festival on Saturday 28th May in Holy Trinity Church and then performed to a crowd of 800 outside the Harbour Office and the King's Arms on Sunday. Raising considerable sums for the Salcombe Festival funds and also for the band's 2012 tour to Barbados, the group also sold many of its "O lady, be good!" and "Feeling good" CDs - both of which are currently available from the Music School or School Reception.

David Cohen, Chairman of the Salcombe Festival, commented that "The Sherborne School Swing Band gave an outstanding concert with their superb vocalist Simon Davies. We hope that they will return in 2012 to be a part of the main Festival". Invitations to perform again have been received from the Mayor's Office in Kingsbridge and from the committee organising the forthcoming commemoration/celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Plymouth Blitz in September.

Nigel Perrin's Music Masterclass

As the inaugural occasion for a new masterclass series at the school to be held twice a year in memory of Sherborne's first Director of Music J R Sterndale-Bennett, Nigel Perrin took a half day masterclass for singers on Sunday 12th June in the Tindall Recital Hall. During the first part of the afternoon individual singers were given the opportunity to work on vocal production and musical interpretation with Nigel for 15-20 minutes. Amongst the consistently high standard of singing there was an outstanding performance of Berlioz O Misere de roi by Ben Craw. Others involved were Henry Chadwick, Joseph Hewitson, Cosimo Malizia, Nicholas Toomey, Robert Folkes, William Ellis, Freddie Blackman and Harry Fielder in repertoire ranging from an excerpt from Mendelssohn's Elijah, Purcell's Music for a while and Mozart's O Isis from Die Zauberflöten to Rodgers & Hammerstein.

The second part of the afternoon saw Nigel Perrin working with the Chamber Choir (pictured below) in performances of Palestrina's Gloriosi Principes and Innocentes. Nigel praised the choir's singing, commenting upon the polished and perfected performances it gave, and also summarised his day at Sherborne in admiring the vocal prowess of Shirburnians with both their willingness and ability to sing with confidence in an era where this is not common. The masterclass concluded with a short performance of Mister Sandman.

Nigel Perrin's musical life began as a boy chorister at Ely Cathedral, from where he won a choral scholarship to King's College, Cambridge, to study under Sir David Willcocks. After a short time spent singing in most of London's professional choirs, Nigel became well-known as the high voice of The King's Singers and for the next eleven years he travelled the world on concert tours, recorded some twenty-five albums and appeared in countless television shows with artists as diverse as Kiri Te Kanawa and Cliff Richard. Currently his busy career includes conducting, directing choral workshops and summer schools, adjudicating and teaching. He is a member of staff at Wells Cathedral Specialist Music School, where he works with young developing voices and trains the Chapel Choir.

SUPA National Senior Schools' Polo won by Sherborne team

On Sunday 26th June Sherborne polo team proved itself to be the force to be reckoned with as the team won the Senior schools tournament at Longdole polo club.

Jack Taylor (L6a), Chris Pitman (L6f), Nick Tobin (5e) and Hassanal Shah (4a) wiped out the other schools round by round on a blazing hot day to reach the finals. All team members were invaluable at setting up or scoring goals. Jack Taylor was instrumental in opening up the play and Hassanal played strongly as the newest member of the team.

The deciding game was played out over two nail-biting chukkas. At the end of the first chukka Sherborne were facing defeat, however they reappeared on the pitch with renewed determination and made light work of turning the result to their favour in the last seven minutes.

English Department Case Study for Cambridge IGCSE

Sherborne's English Department was one of the first schools in the UK to adopt both the Cambridge IGCSE English Language and English Literature. The department has developed close links with the Board and is delighted by its results with these rigorous qualifications; more boys in the 2010 cohort achieved an A* for Language than ever before and the total exceeded that of many Eton Group Schools. The results also place the school in the top 5% of independent schools for Value-Added results.

As a consequence, the English department was asked to be a case study for the CIE website. The Head of Department, Mrs Rebecca de Pelet and the department's newest member, Mr James Winter, can be seen via the following link HERE.

Upper Sixth gain 3 prestigious university programmes

Against fierce competition, two Sherborne Upper Sixth Form boys have secured offers on three prestigious university programmes run in conjunction with prominent financial services companies.

After a final assessment centre which included an hour long interview, Mattie Hooper (a) was accepted on University of Newcastle's Business Accounting and Finance course, which is run in partnership with PwC. He also gained an offer for University of Lancaster's Accounting, Auditing and Finance course sponsored by Ernst and Young. Alex Carr (e), facing competition from 5,000 applicants, has been offered a place on KPMG's new six year School Leavers' Programme, which combines professional training with a degree programme at either University of Durham or University of Exeter. Students on this programme start on a salary of £20,000, which rises to £45,000 in the final three years, and they will complete it with a degree, a professional qualification and no student debt.

Sherborne Qatar Design Competition Winner Announced

Atkins Limited have been announced as the winners of the competition to design the new Sherborne Qatar School to be built in Doha, Qatar.

The competition was organised on behalf of the Sherborne Qatar Board of Governors by RIBA Competitions. Sherborne Qatar is a joint venture between Sherborne School and General Trading Group Qatar represented by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Ahmed Al Thani. Sherborne Qatar was founded in 2009 on a temporary site to the west of Doha and with the opening of the Senior School in September 2010 now caters for pupils from Reception through to Year 9. The vision is to establish a school that offers the very best of Sherborne's ethos and education within the cultural framework of Qatar.

The new school will provide a unique educational experience for Qatari children and the children of expatriates working in Qatar and neighbouring Gulf States. The new school will eventually cater for approximately 1500 pupils across the 4 to 18 age range and prepare them for entry to the major universities of the world. The competition sought to select an architect-led design team with whom Sherborne Qatar can work to successfully deliver their vision and aspirations for the new school. Atkins was selected from a short-list which also included (in alphabetical order): Arab Engineering Bureau; Avanti Architects; Farrow Partnership Architects Inc.; Hopkins Architects and Technital S.p.A.

The six teams were invited to develop strategic design ideas and initial concepts which they presented to the Sherborne Qatar Board - together with the Board's advisers, staff, pupils and parent representatives - at a final assessment held in Doha. The Board felt that Atkins had demonstrated an excellent understanding of the School's requirements and presented some interesting initial ideas of how the cultural identities of Sherborne UK and Sherborne Qatar might be expressed within the built form to represent their shared educational ethos. The Board also felt that the experienced Atkins team had the ability to successfully deliver the project in Doha.

Members of the Sherborne Qatar Board commented as follows: "I would like to congratulate all the participants of the design competition for their effort and I am looking forward to working on this venture with the Atkins team. The inspiration behind Sherborne Qatar falls in line with His Highness Sheikh Hamad the Emir and Her Highness Sheikha Moza's vision of pursuing excellence in education and we aim to implement their vision and continue on a path of academic excellence." Sheikh Abdullah Bin Ahmed Al Thani (Chair, Sherborne Qatar Board) "I congratulate Atkins for winning the RIBA Design Competition. They captured and understood the ethos of Sherborne Dorset and pragmatically applied that to their design for a signature building for Sherborne Qatar. We look forward to working with them." Prof. Richard Hodder-Williams (Chair of Governors, Sherborne UK).

On learning that they had won the competition, Martin Pease (Atkins, Head of Architecture UK) commented: "We are delighted that our approach, which was to create a unique place borne out of the memory of Sherborne in Dorset, was the one selected by the Sherborne Qatar Judging Panel. Our design seeks to create a school with a shared identity, not restricted by the past, but rather ready to absorb and evolve its own future in Doha. This success is testament to the hard work and collaboration between our UK and Middle East offices, and demonstrates Atkins truly global expertise."

Patrick Shelley Music Competition 2011

The fifth annual Patrick Shelley Music Competition for Advanced Instrumentalists was won by Theodore Irvine for his outstanding performance of two of Gershwin's Preludes on the piano. Adjudicator Rod Dunk praised Theodore's playing in describing it as "music which really took me somewhere and which spoke of clear musical vision resulting in a very mature interpretation." Performing on the Music School's newest grand piano, now just one year old, Theodore's use of tonal colour, and his ability to make the instrument "sing", was also praised.

Winners of the other sections of the competition were Jason Choi (flute: woodwind prize), Alexander Barrie (trombone: brass), Ben Craw (singing) and Alistair Hughes (cello: strings).

The adjudicator of the competition, Roderick Dunk, is one of Britain's most versatile conductors. He studied double bass and conducting at the Birmingham School of Music, before following the long tradition of conductors who have learned their craft from within the orchestra, as a member of both the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. As a conductor he now appears frequently with the BBC Concert Orchestra, including regular broadcasts of BBC Radio 2's 'Friday Night is Music Night'. The many other British orchestras he has conducted include the Hallé Orchestra, the CBSO, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, the Northern Chamber Orchestra, the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra and the East of England Orchestra (now Sinfonia Viva). With the London Symphony Orchestra he has made a number of commercial recordings, including symphonies by Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as an anthology of Broadway hits entitled 'That's Entertainment'.

Academic Results Better Than Ever at Sherborne

Sherborne School again announced excellent A level and IB results. 52% of grades were A* or A or the IB equivalent. This is an improvement of 5% over the same results in 2010. This is against the national trend. Statistics released by the BBC today show that for the first time in 15 years there has been no national increase in the total proportion getting A or A* grades.

'I am extremely pleased that my first set of A level and IB results show the clear commitment we have to setting academic standards high and getting the best possible results we can for each boy in the School', says Headmaster Chris Davis. 'The overall figures are very pleasing and I would like to congratulate both the boys and their teachers on their achievements. In particular, I am delighted that James Lello and Tom Gibbs have respectively achieved their ambitions to study English at Cambridge and History at Oxford.'

Stronger than ever GCSE results at Sherborne School

Honorary Scholarship Awards

Following their outstanding GCSE examination performance, five boys in the Lower Sixth have been awarded Honorary Academic Scholarships. Archie Hamilton, Christopher Freeman, Thomas Wintle and Edward MacDonald all secured 10 A* grades and Angus Murdoch gained 9A*. Last week, at a dinner for over 70 Academic Scholars, Deputy Head Dr David Smith congratulated the boys on their success and encouraged them to view their academic work not just as means of securing a place at university but as a way of enriching their lives. The annual dinner is held in the Old School Room at the heart of the school and recognises the importance of academic scholarship as being at the heart of the school's aim.

Acting Director of Sport

US Universities Visit Sherborne

On Sunday 18th September Sherborne School played host to a visit from four of the top US universities. International Admissions Tutors from Duke, Georgetown, Penn and Stanford made presentations on how to apply to US universities. They also presented details of their own individual institutions. This was the first visit of its kind for US universities to present to Schools in the South West of England.

National Recognition for Sherborne's Higher Education Advice

Sherborne has received national recognition for its leading role in offering up to date, evidence-based Higher Education advice.

Philip Rogerson, the Director of Higher Education and Careers, in recent years has visited all 120 UK universities, as well as others in the USA and Europe. As a result, he has been invited onto the editorial board of The Complete University Guide as the sole representative of Higher Education advisers in schools. He has also been interviewed by BBC Television on the subject of "Is university value for money?". In our commitment to being alert to rapid changes within the university sector, other members of the department have already attended Open Days at Bath and Bristol this term.

Third Form Geography day to Lyn Valley

116 Third form pupils and ten staff enjoyed a great day of geographical exploration on Exmoor and in the Lyn valley yesterday. From the start on Exmoor, down the tributary river of Farley Water to Watersmeet and the East Lyn river, the year split into teaching groups and learnt more about the landscape of the area and the causes of the famous 1952 flood which devastated the town of Lynmouth. Observations were made as to the changes in and around the river since that day. As Dr Stiff so eloquently put it, 'There is a lot of Geography in this valley!'.

European Day of Languages

Celebration of the European Day of Languages September 2011

The Modern Foreign Languages Department's annual celebration of the European Day of Languages took place on Friday September 23rd 2011. Whilst the teaching staff struggled with ordering their coffee and cakes in Portuguese, the Third Form rose to the challenges of being introduced to a new language as well as being taught by Sixth Formers instead of teachers. The Sixth Formers prepared interactive and lively lessons in French, German and Spanish. As the Third Form commented:

"The Sixth Formers who took our Spanish lesson made the lesson very fun and enjoyable by using techniques not usually used by teachers."

"The Sixth Formers showed us how good your language skills can become in just a few years."

"The Spanish lesson was fascinating and enthusiastically taught by the Sixth formers. It was an unusual experience to be taught by somebody who had experienced what I was taught and how I was taught. They found better ways of teaching us compared to more mature teachers."

Pupils enjoyed a brief immersion into a new language, learning how to sing in Portuguese read children's books in Dutch, write their name in Arabic and describe themselves in Russian.

"We had a chance to experience a new language that we would not normally learn."

"The European Day of languages was fantastic and learning a completely new language was extremely enjoyable. I enjoyed our feeble attempts to pronounce unfamiliar words in Russian!"

"The European Day of Languages was a day for the students to not only experience a new language but also to have fun."

"The best bit was learning the alphabet in Russian. The brief introduction into a language I had never thought of learning was great."

Sherborne RUFC vs Sherborne School rugby match

Last week saw the inaugural match for Sherborne's First XV against Sherborne Town's RUFC U19 Colts.

Mike Trew, Sherborne RFC Chairman said, "We were delighted to play our first ever floodlit game for our Colts XV against Sherborne School. We thought it was an excellent match, refereed superbly by Simon Lilley who has a foot in both camps." The final scoreline was 34-24 in Sherborne School's favour.

Physics Lectures Programme

Throughout the academic year a programme of visiting lecturers will present though-provoking topics to the boys. The next lecture on 2nd November will be "Frontier Particle Physics - the Large Hadron Collider and the Origin of Mass" by Nick Evans from the School of Physics and Astronomy, Southampton University.

The Large Hadron Collider is currently up and running in Geneva, colliding protons together with ten times more energy than has ever been achieved before. The goal is to break matter up to find the fundamental constituents of the Universe and the forces by which they interact. In particular, physicists are seeking to find a new particle called the Higgs Boson that is responsible for generating particle masses.

On Wednesday 12th October, Mr Harris and four Upper 6th Form boys were lucky enough to get tickets to hear Willie Walsh, the CEO of the newly formed International Airlines Group, speak at the Bristol Business School. IAG is the parent company of British Airways and Iberia and is looking to make considerable cost savings and revenue gains from their new structure. He was frank about the economic problems that they face and the challenges that the government's lack of an aviation policy poses. The proposed train link from Heathrow to Gatwick was given short shrift. It was a most enjoyable evening that should help the boys improve the analysis and evaluation in their essays.

Geography Data Collection on the Sid

61 Fourth Form boys and six staff enjoyed a rewarding data collection day on the river Sid in Devon on Friday 14 October. Boys were split into small groups to collect river channel data, to assess the changing characteristics of a river as it moves downstream. There was also an opportunity to view the formation of a meander near Sidford, and the attempts made to manage the river as it moves into Sidmouth itself. This practice day will be beneficial for the boys when it comes to the data collection for their controlled assessment projects in the summer.

Lower Sixth Geographers Urban Regeneration in Manchester

The L6th geographers have just returned from a highly successful and enjoyable trip to Manchester. During the stay, in a converted old mill building on the Rochdale canal in the Castlefield district of Manchester, the boys undertook a walking tour of the city evaluating the success [or failure] of various urban regeneration policies that have been put in place.

The walk took in the cafe lifestyle Castlefield area on near lock 92, Spinningfields legal and financial area, Expression Square and the Arndale Centre. The impact of the IRA bomb in 1996 was evaluated. From here the tour moved on to the old print works, once the largest printing production outside London, and now a cinema and restaurant area. The new Sports City, based around the Commonwealth Games of 2002 and now the home of Manchester City, was visited before the tour headed to Salford Quay and the new media city. The £650 million investment in this area is clear to see with the BBC already in place and ITV moving, in 2012.

The second day saw the boys complete an urban microclimate transect through the city, starting from Torside Reservoir in the Peak district, through the centre of Manchester and out to Mere in Cheshire. The experience of the trip and the results collected should prove to be a fantastic aid to learning. The conduct of the boys was exemplary at all times and they were a credit to Sherborne School.

We are delighted to announce that Simon Lilley, Head of PE, has been appointed U16 South West of England Divisional Rugby coach. Simon will be working with some of our Fifth form boys who are working towards South West selection through the Dorset and Wilts County side.

"I am delighted that Simon will be coaching the divisional U16 squad, and I am sure that his skills and enthusiasm will help the South West players achieve their potential as they challenge for an England shirt next term." said Dave Guy, Head of Rugby at Sherborne School, and England U16 Coach.

Simon has also been selected to be an official London 2012 Olympics Games maker, working within the press and media team at the Excel Area in London's Docklands - the site for Judo, Weightlifting, Boxing and Wrestling amongst other sports.

Oscar Peterson Tribute Evening

Three sixth form Music Scholars organised an Oscar Peterson Tribute Evening in the School Dining Hall during the October Half Term break. The event, which involved two grand pianos set in the traditional layout (facing each other) with bass and drums, sold out at 192 tickets within days of being advertised in the local press. The concert was the culmination of talented pianist Oliver Toomey's EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), an Edexcel accredited project which many Upper Sixth Shirburnians take alongside their A Levels studies in order to enhance their university applications.

Having studied the legendary playing style of Oscar Peterson, attended a similar event at Ronnie Scott's, and written an extensive research review, Oliver played many Peterson favourites including Blue Moon and I got rhythm, together with some more contemporary numbers such as Stevie Wonder's Isn't she lovely. Joined by Felix Stickland on the bass and Toby Cairns on the drums, with Director of Music James Henderson on the second piano, Oliver's stylish playing won many enthusiastic plaudits during the evening and there have already been requests for a similar event. The second of two 45 minute sets ended with an extended performance of C Jam Blues which received a standing ovation from the audience.

Remembrance

On Friday 11 November the School marked Armistice Day. The School community gathered in The Courts just before 11am to remember the 498 Old Boys who have died in war. Following a prayer from the Chaplain and the striking of the Abbey clock, boys and staff observed the two minute silence.

Sherborne hosts Eton Group Deputies

On Tuesday 15 November Sherborne hosted the Eton Group Deputies Conference. Dr David Smith, Deputy Head Academic, chaired the meeting of twelve deputies from leading HMC schools in southern England. Topics covered included developments in the post 16 curriculum including the Pre U and the integration of digitial technology into the classroom. 'The opportunity to share best practice with colleagues is one of the most valuable INSET exercises' commented Dr Smith. Next year University College School, London, will be hosting the event.

Turing Documentary to be broadcast 21 November

A new documentary about one of Sherborne School's most famous Old Shirburnians, Alan Turing, will be shown on 21 November 2011 at 9pm on Channel 4: Click here

The documentary includes footage filmed in August 2011 at Sherborne School, including an interview with Professor David Leavitt talking about Turing and the Turing archive held at the School, photographs of which are attached. The documentary will also include cine film footage taken of the School by a master in the 1930s.

Alan Turing (1912-1954) attended Sherborne School from 1926 and 1931 where he was a member of Westcott House. After Turing's death in 1954, Turing's mother wanted to ensure that his time at Sherborne was commemorated and donated to the School a purpose-built wooden chest containing, amongst other things, Turing's School reports, the School gold medal for mathematics he was awarded in 1931, and the OBE he was awarded in 1945 for his secret war service.

2012 is the anniversary of Turing's birth and in connection with this the School is planning a year of events, including lectures and an exhibition.

Swing Band at Salisbury Cathedral School

The Swing Band visited Salisbury Cathedral School on the evening Friday 11th November to give a one hour concert, organised by the school's Director of Music Ian Wicks, to a packed house. Two old Salisbury Head Choristers (Robert Folkes and Alex Stagg) are currently at Sherborne and were pleased to take part in the concert, which included three joint items with the Cathedral School's excellent "Jazzbytes". Accompanied by the Swing band, singer Patrick Evans-Bevan, of the Upper Sixth, sang Joe Stilgoe's "I like this one" amongst other favourites "Just in time" and "At last", while the band played several instrumental numbers by Charlie Parker including "Yardbird Suite" alongside "A foggy day" and "Pennsylvania 6-5000".

Dave Andrews, the director of Jazzbytes, commented of the Sherborne Swing Band that "it was great to see that there is a school upholding the Big Band tradition as well as all the other ensembles and one where a young musician can go and obviously be nurtured. It was great that they play some classic swing charts from the 30s and 40s as well as the more modern music - your band are true 'keepers of the flame'."

New Director of Sport Announced

David has also been promoted to coach of the England South U16 Rugby squad.

Prior to joining Sherborne, David had been Head of Boys' Games and 1st XV Coach at Hymers College in Hull.

Fifth Form History Trip to Berlin

Forty Fifth Form Historians spent a packed two days in Berlin exploring the importance of the city during the Third Reich and the Cold War. It was a superb trip which gave a real understanding into both periods.
The first day was spent looking at central Berlin. Our first site was the Story of Berlin museum which gives an excellent overview of the city's history and includes a Cold War nuclear bunker. From there we went to the Holocaust Memorial and then looked at former Nazi places of importance including Goering's Air Ministry, the Topography of Terror and the location of Hitler's bunker. The constant presence of remnants of the Berlin Wall was with us through the day although the money demanded by the guard at Checkpoint Charlie for a photo showed which side came out on top in the Cold War. The excellent German Historical Museum provided sources and artefacts not available in text books before we returned footsore to the hotel. An excellent pizza meal reminded us of a former German alliance, while a moonlit walk to the floodlit Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag provided a fitting ending to the evening.

The final day was a sobering one but thoroughly thought-provoking. The stark remains of Sachsenhausen were matched by the grim surroundings of the former Stasi prison, where our guide's mother had been an inmate. Small groups of boys then gave impressive interpretations of the Stalinist propaganda friezes at the Soviet War memorial at Treptower Park before we took the U-Bahn to the best preserved section of the Berlin Wall, where a viewing platform enabled us to see how it would have looked during the Cold War. After such a day a well deserved relaxing evening in a typical German Beer Cellar was appreciated by all. This fortified us for the evening journey up the TV Tower, former symbol of Communist technology, where we enjoyed 360 degree views of the city.

The boys were all excellent company and subsequent History lessons on the Cold War have been frequently enlivened and informed by references to what we saw and heard. It was a real pleasure having such a delightful group really making the most of their half-term.

PE students trip to Bath University

On Monday the 28th November our group of enthusiastic U6th Physical Education Students headed to Bath University for an afternoon of testing in their Exercise Physiology Sports Science Labs. Having recently covered Energy Systems and Aerobic Capacity as part of the syllabus it was exciting for the boys to see science and performance in action. Harry Hudson (g) said it was "extremely interesting" and is looking forward to doing more as part of his degree.

Joe Bridger (c) volunteered to be VO2 Max tested, which is an exact measure of the amount of oxygen our bodies can take up and utilise in one minute - a direct measure of fitness. His reading of 59.41 ml/kg/min compares favourably with premiership football and rugby players. He was also tested for lactate threshold and OBLA (Onset of Blood Lactate) which is the point when our bodies begin producing lactic acid. This was at 14 km/ph and rapidly led to fatigue.

Both Edward Matts (c) and Will Lane (g) participated in the Wingate test for power using a cycle erg and a force monitor. The results showed Will to reach peak power of 1094 Watts in 2.3 seconds and Ed to reach his peak of 767 Watts in 4.28 seconds. Ed's drop off during the 30 second test was far lower (45% compared to 63%) showing he has greater speed endurance.

All students then attended a lecture on Principles of Training and Athlete Periodisation; another module covered this year and therefore greatly beneficial to see how training principles are applied to our most elite sportsmen and women. All in all, a fantastic field trip.

Geography Society talk on International Health

On Tuesday 29th November, the Geography Society met in the Westcott Room. Guest speaker Dr Adele Wolujewicz joined Sixth Form speakers Hamish Dudgeon and Jack Opperman to deliver talks to the Sixth Form geographers. Dr Wolujewicz is a qualified medical doctor and talked about her experiences in Bangladesh, where she recently spent six weeks working in an IDDRC hospital in Dhaka, as part of her Masters in International Health. Her talk included reference to population and climate change as well as infectious disease. Hamish talked about the impact of climate change and Jack concluded the evening with a presentation on the impact of Chinese investment in Zambia. Both boys hope to go on and study geography at university.

Strings Festival

This year's Strings Festival, organised by Head of Strings Sarah Drury, was led and adjudicated by David Ayre. A double bassist who is Guest Principal of the London Festival Orchestra, David has performed and recorded with the Bingham Quartet, Smith Quartet, Le Page Ensemble, Vivaldi Camerata, The Bochmann Ensemble and the Coull Quartet as well as featuring as a soloist with the English String Orchestra. He also has a busy schedule recording for the film industry and has worked with a number of well known artists including John Dankworth and Paul McCartney.

Emphasising that his preference would be not to declare any winners during what he described as being "a feast of music for string players", David Ayre chose Oscar Faulkner (viola) as winner of the pre-Grade 6 section with a performance of a Minuet by Bach. Highly commended were Edward Smith (cello) with Pamela Wedgewood's "Sometime maybe" and Edward Pyman (violin) with Bennett's "Buskin".

The overall winner of the Grade 8 class was Henry Chadwick (cello) playing Vivaldi's Largo from the sixth sonata, and Cosimo Malizia (double bass) was highly commended with a performance of Hester's "The bull steps out".

Documentary maker Kosminsky visits Sherborne's Sixth Forms

On 28th November Sherborne was part a cooperative venture involving hundreds of Sixth Form students from all four Sherborne senior schools. The Palestine/Israel conflict, and Peter Kosminsky's film "The Promise", which was shown earlier this year on Channel 4, was the focus for the wider discussion. Peter is perhaps the UK's most distinguished writer/director of docu-dramas, which include "Shoot to Kill" on Northern Ireland and "The Government Inspector" on Dr. David Kelly and Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. We were fortunate to have him with us for the whole day. Prompted by questions from The Bishop of Sherborne, Dr. Graham Kings, he led the students through the difficulties of making the film, with a largely Israeli cast and crew, in Israel, while the afternoon was devoted to a series of workshop sessions on different aspects of the conflict and its relevance to Judaism, Christianity and Islam led by Jews, Arabs and others who have worked in the area.

The day culminated in an Advent Carol service at Sherborne Abbey, which was open to the public. Dr Kings led the service, which included readings by a Rabbi, and from the Qur'an, while soprano Debbie Fink sang in Aramaic.

Wind Band in Portsmouth: Gunwharf Quays

Under the direction of Clare Jackson, Head of Woodwind, and Andy Fawbert, Head of Brass, the 84 strong Wind Band entertained Christmas shoppers during late night shopping on Thursday at Gunwharf Quays. Playing outdoors in the wintry temperatures, especially beside the sea, was hard work for all the musicians but nonetheless, with the Spinnaker Tower shining just above them, the band played seasonal music and also old favourites such as the Chicago medley, Mission Impossible and Braveheart. The acoustic of the shopping venue certainly helped the band being heard: only actually inside shops or restaurants could the jubilant sounds of the band be distanced.

In recent years the Wind Band has grown both in size and quality, with invitations to perform also increasing in number. Earlier this year it performed at the Welsh Millennium Centre in Cardiff, while in 2010 it entertained Christmas shoppers at Clarks Village in Street and in 2009 the band played in the newly opened Cabot Circus in Bristol. The Wind Band's next concert is on Friday 2nd March 2012 when it will be performing on home ground in the Big Schoolroom: tickets for the event, which will have a gala concert feel to it, complete with raffle, will be available from the Music School in the middle of January.

Sixth Form Ski Trip, Les Menuires 2011

On Saturday the 10th of December, with memories of end-of-term exams, Christmas carols and House Dinners fresh; an enthusiastic group of Sixth Form students set off for the French Alps and the resort of Les Menuires in search of snow. With all transfers on time and a very knowledgeable team of staff in resort the group arrived, checked in, ate and were fitted hire before retiring knowing that six days of skiing and boarding in the Three Valley region awaited.

Having worried about the early season conditions it quickly became clear that lack of snow was never going to be an issue, more an excess of it. Our first two days offered the best visibility and under the ever expert instruction of ESF the group naturally split into three allowing all abilities to be catered for. The location of Le Skilt hotel could not have been better, twenty metres from the main lifts, on the doorstep of the undercover town shops and an all-inclusive menu which was fully enjoyed by boys at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

On the morning of the 13th the heavy snow began and continued for the next four days - a total of 120cm, which is almost unheard of, and made skiing challenging. Comic highlights were wipe-outs from Charlie Gent (L6b) and Ed Dance (L6f), a snow igloo fashioned on the hotel balcony by Simon Fraser (L6e), some air-bag assisted flips from Peter Trebelev (U6f) and Alexander Warren (U6m) and some token efforts from Mr Scott and me. The evening après-ski was spent enjoying the buzz of the hotel restaurant and sports bar, DVD nights, bowling in Val Thoren and a widely enjoyed trip to the indoor spa, swimming pool and sauna experience offered in the leisure centre just two minutes walk from the hotel.

The six days passed off with no illnesses or injuries - overall a great way to start the Christmas holidays and round off the Michaelmas term; I am already excited about the 2012 trip. My greatest thanks to Mr Patterson, Mr Woods and Mr Scott for giving up their holidays to make this trip a success.

IB Research trip to British Library

Mrs Clayton escorted the Lower Sixth IB students to the British Library last week to attend a 'Digital Pathways' Workshop in order to develop digital research skills through an enquiry led session.

Students developed research questions inspired by an object in the British Library collection and by investigating this object they were able to develop their critical thinking, information literacy and enquiry skills. Tasks included the effective use of search engines, how to assess the reliability of websites, and a discussion on copyright and plagiarism issues. Once the research was complete the students then had the opportunity to produce an output (for example a film, website or animation) which they felt most effectively communicated their findings.

All IB students must complete the Extended Essay element as part of the core and the skills acquired on the day will now be applied during the essay writing process. The extended essay involves in depth research and students are to a large extent, responsible for their own learning. The research process of the extended essay involves intellectual risk-taking, extensive reflection; open-mindedness and balance.

The students enjoyed the day and it is hoped the experience will benefit them enormously as they commence their Extended Essay this term.

Chamber Choir at Hazlegrove School

The Chamber Choir visited Hazlegrove School on Tuesday to give a short recital in the school's theatre. The Director of Music at Hazlegrove, Yvonne Fawbert, welcomed the choir and, in praising its performance afterwards, made particular mention of the ethereal quality of the polyphony by Palestrina with which many of the school were not especially familiar. It being the season of Epiphany, the choir sang three relevant pieces by Palestrina and one by Lassus, an arrangement of the Epiphany Responsory, and "The Three Kings" by Cornelius. Other repertoire included lighter "close harmony" arrangements of "Lollipop" and "Fly me to the moon" amongst others.

The Chamber Choir sings the Introit every Sunday in the Abbey, then joining with the much larger Choir for the responses and anthems. All involved with the Hazlegrove concert much enjoyed the opportunity which, as a Prep School visit, was the first in recent years for this ensemble. The next concert performance is in Cheap Street Church in April, followed by their appearance as a Close Harmony group in the Abbey Festival in May.

Entrepreneurs Society

On Thursday 19th January the School Entrepreneurs Society held it inaugural meeting. It was addressed by Charles Braughan of Westaways Sausages, a serial entrepreneur, who spoke at the length about his own background from Sherborne to the present day and outlined the key issues that need to be addressed in setting up a new entrepreneurial business as well as an insight into the sausage business. He inspired a number of the boys to consider this career route in the future.

Eamonn Gearon - The Arab Spring

On the 21st of January, Mr Eamonn Gearon gave a talk to the whole school in the BSR. Although he is principally an author, political journalist and Arabist, he is well known for his great insight and understanding between the greater Middle East and the West. He is best known for is his book 'The Sahara: A Cultural History', and in 1997 he began his life-long education in desert survival, navigation and camels.

Mr Gearon started his talk on the areas of North Africa and the Middle East that had seen any form of a revolution in the past year, and he focused on Egypt in particular. To give some background as to what it was that Mr Gearon was lecturing on, the Arab Spring, otherwise known as the Arab Awakening, is a revolutionary wave of protests that occurred throughout the Arab world that began 18th December 2010. There have been revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt and a civil war in Libya resulting in the fall of its government. Mr Gearon captivated his audience talking about the reigns of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, leader of Tunisia, Hosni Mubarak, former leader of Egypt and probably the most talked about worldwide, Muammar Gaddafi. I found this fascinating and Mr Gearon gave some perspective on the lives of people living in these countries by telling us that, due to these tyrants' long reigns, they would probably have only seen one or possibly two leaders in power. Mr Gearon went on to talk about how the people of these countries, especially in Cairo where he stayed during the demonstrations, managed to combine the energy of youth and the experience of the old in a dynamic way. As he went on to tell us about the use of the internet and mobile phones to spark the uprisings, Mr Gearon made a fascinating point which I think summed up not just that point but also the entire talk: "A leader with 30 years' experience under his belt doesn't stand a chance against teenagers with the internet and mobile phones."

After a captivating talk, Mr Gearon answered some key questions from the floor and thanked the school for the invitation. Eammon Gearon had a lot to tell, with an air of Kate Adie about him. I look forward to reading his book.

Three Sherborne boys enjoyed successes at the Compete tennis rounds at Team Bath Tennis Academy yesterday. All three boys had a good day, with James Sewry (5d) and Angus Fraser (3m) winning a match and Peter Lederman (3a) both matches.

Player of the day was Angus Fraser for the most improvement in this event, and for playing out two long three-set matches. His win added to previous results will give him a ratings increase to 8.2.

The wins the boys gained at Compete go towards improving their individual ratings. The next tennis rankings event is at Shaftesbury on February 5th.

Sherborne Hockey coach represented Wales at Euro Hockey 2012

Sherborne's hockey coach Leah Wilkinson has just returned from Portugal where she represented Wales in Euro Hockey's Indoor Championships 2012.

Leah was a key player in securing Wales' final position of 2nd in the tournament and was overall highest goal-scorer.

David Guy, Director of Sport at Sherborne, said "We are proud to have Leah on the coaching team at Sherborne, she brings professionalism and an enthusiasm for sport, which benefits the boys greatly."

Schools' Biathlon Championships Semi-Finals

Sunday 22nd January saw three boys from the Sixth Form took part in the Schools' Biathlon Championship Semi-Finals, held at Bath University, which involves a 100m swim followed by a 1km run. They were competing against a strong field which included athletes from a range of schools including Millfield, King's School, Bruton and Taunton School. While the pool didn't bring out the best in our athletes the track most certainly did with Harry Hudson (U6g)leading the pack for some of the race. Tom Hole (U6b) and Harry Lane (L6b) had a great race with their time in training really paying off. All three athletes finished in respectable places and had a great first Biathlon - well done.

Joint Sherborne Schools' INSET 8 February

Each year the three senior schools in Sherborne - The Gryphon, Sherborne and Sherborne Girls - work collaboratively to provide a joint training opportunity for our teaching staff with a focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning.

This year we are focusing on developing the skills of our teachers in preparing students for transition to university. Representatives from other local state and independent schools have also been invited. The event is taking place on all three school campuses.

22 academic staff from 14 universities, from Cardiff to London, are taking part in a discussion with Sixth Form teachers in specialist subject groups.

Delegates have been asked to lead discussions on the following aspects:

What transition difficulties do first year students experience?
What is the range of courses in your subject that can be studied in Higher Education?
What are the differences between these courses?
What are the dominant teaching and assessment styles in your subject in Higher Education?
Preferred subject combinations to study your subject in Higher Education
What do you look for in a UCAS application from a student who wishes to study your subject in Higher Education?

It is hoped that this event will enhance the understanding both of school and university staff about the academic issues faced by students in the transition from school to university.

Department of Education KS4 Performance Data Tables

95% GCSE A*-C in June 2011

The data used in the recent DoE Performance Tables and published in the Daily Telegraph on 26 January, had a number of inaccuracies which have incorrectly represented the School's GCSE performance in June 2011 by a substantial margin. We have contacted the Department of Education so that the performance tables can be amended as soon as possible.

To clarify, the percentage of boys during the academic year 2010/11 at Sherborne School gaining five A* - C GCSE's, including English and Maths, was 95% not 75% as published.
