Design and Technology

Design and Technology is an established subject at Sherborne School and the department has recently been through a complete redevelopment program.  Pupils use excellent facilities to help develop their creativity, researching and designing their own products and prepare for entry into careers such as Architecture, Design or Engineering.  Resources include a dedicated computer suite with access to fast Apple Macintosh and PCs with digital links to a computer controlled laser cutter so that pupils’ designs can be downloaded and modelled or cut out directly from their CAD drawings. Construction and development of any prototypes takes place in well equipped teaching workshops under the guidance of experienced technical and teaching staff.

The subject overlaps other curriculum area such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Art and Economics.  Primarily it demands high levels of communication and aesthical judgement and an ability to communicate ideas on paper or on a computer.   Decisions about how their designs are to be made are supported by field trips to design houses and manufacturing plants.  The subject looks for opportunities to support its pupils’ ambitions through entering suitable candidates for prestigious external scholarships.  These can expose pupils to opportunities for further studies beyond the school and identify them as highly suitable candidates when applying to university.
