Sherborne - An Education For Life

Performance Drama

Sherborne is proud of its dramatic tradition which has resulted in Old Shiburnians such as Sir Richard Eyre, Jeremy Irons and Hugh Bonneville forging prestigious careers in theatre and on film.

Every boy entering the school experiences curriculum drama in his first term. The school is keen to encourage boys’ involvement in the diverse theatrical programme on offer – be it through performance, stage management, lighting, sound or set construction.

The Powell Theatre seats 220 people and offers impressive facilities. Within the academic year there are two major School productions, four House plays and a Junior School play. In addition there are regular modern language productions and the School encourages boys to write and direct their own work. It is hoped their enthusiasm and skill is inspired by regular trips to professional shows and the employment of Artists in Residence. The Big School Room is used for the large sale, ever popular Musical productions whilst The Hargreaves Studio is a Black-Box space perfect for intimate, experimental performances and teaching purposes.

Sherborne is lucky to boast a full-time Theatre Manager and Technician and a full-time Wardrobe Mistress who provide a professional service to complement the busy timetable. The new Head of Drama has an impressive professional performance background and a strong team of highly experienced teachers also direct on a regular basis.

The school mounts regular productions to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they have received acclaimed national reviews.
