Posted: 08/02/2010

Requiem, Mozart : Schickaslied, Brahms
Mozart's Overture to the Magic Flute

Guest Conductor: John Jenkins
Soprano: Katherine Manley
Mezzo-Soprano: Emma Hattersley
Tenor: Ben Alden
Bass-Baritone: Callum Thorpe
Leader of the Orchestra: Tony Urbainczyk

Sherborne School Choral Society’s performance of Mozart’s Requiem promises to be a moving performance of one of Mozart’s last work. Written in 1791 when the composer was already terminally ill, part of the composition was written whilst actually on his death-bed and of the twelve movements only the Kyrie was entirely completed. The task of completing the masterpiece fell to Franz Süssmayr who painstakingly constructed the work from fragments and indeed composed the whole of the last three movements. Many find the opening Kyrie the most moving part of the work, whilst the Lacrymosa (of which only the Tuba Miram was original) is a crowd-puller.

The evening performance is completed with Brahms’s Schickaslied (Song of Destiny), op 54, a short but entirely choral work, and Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute.
