Sport at Sherborne School is an integral part of the boys' lives and it is expected that they will all strive to achieve their potential in the sport of their choice. Whether they prove to be an elite performer on the national stage, or a member of the 5th XI Cricket side, we aim to assist and support them along the way. There is a broad choice of sports on offer, depth to the major sports, and a commitment to excellence throughout.

Central to the programme is a team of talented and committed members of the academic staff who are supported by a number of professional coaches, including the staff from Bath Rugby Academy, Jimmy Adams (Old Shirburnian and Captain of Hampshire CCC), and numerous others who contribute to the successful running of the twenty-six sports on offer at Sherborne. Use of the excellent gym facilities is monitored by a conditioning coach, and we offer significant help with school-based physiotherapists and a sports psychologist.

The recently launched Elite Athlete Mentoring Scheme will provide further assistance to the most gifted, and will support athletes such as David Buck and George Buckney (England U16 Rugby), Ed Matts (England U17 Hockey), Gilly Sutcliffe (GB Sailing) and others as they aim to achieve their personal goals in their chosen sports.

A challenging playing programme is offered in all three terms, across the range of sports, from Polo to Fives, and there are frequent opportunities for Shirburnians to test their skills abroad through a varied and planned touring programme. For example, the Senior Rugby team has just returned from a successful tour to Australia, Cricketers will visit Dubai next Easter, and the Ski Racing Team competes annually in Switzerland in the Independent Schools Championships.

As well as the indoor facilities within the Sports Centre, the school can also boast nineteen rugby / soccer pitches, twenty-six cricket nets and nine squares, two all-weather pitches and numerous tennis courts on three different surfaces. However, there is a real drive to improve further and there are significant plans for further development.

Sherborne sport is certainly on an upward curve, with more boys enjoying success in more sports than ever before. As a result of their hard work and enthusiasm, and with support from the School, its staff and coaches, a significant number are now able to compete and win on a testing and challenging circuit, and derive huge benefit in terms of both personal development and enjoyment.
