Athletics

Athletics is a growing sport at Sherborne. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced athlete, there is plenty of experienced coaching available to you.

Boys at Sherborne are able to choose Athletics as a Trinity term sport option but our athletes also have the opportunity to train all year round by attending weekly sessions with the Yeovil Olympiad squad. Here a wealth of experienced coaches is available to aid the development of boys - whether it is in winter conditioning programmes or in technical training during the competition season.

In the summer term we have a committed team of coaches from within the staff and a series of experienced external professionals who run weekly coaching sessions at the school track.  Tony Harris, our middle distance coach is a former Welsh international and GB Commonwealth Games athlete and was the first Welshman to run the mile in under four minutes. We also benefit from the expertise of two Level Three UK Athletics Coaches, Tim Watton (throws) and Brian Camp (jumps), and a Level Four-qualified coach, Bill Whistlecroft MBE (sprints and hurdles).

Athletics operates primarily during the summer term, with twice weekly training sessions and matches on weekends. In the first half of term these matches revolve around all age group fixtures with other schools. After half term our athletes focus mainly on County and National level athletics.

Alongside our external competitions, we also run a House Competition for the Third Form and a full school Sports Day during the summer term to which parents are invited.
