With two full choral services in the Abbey each week, it is no surprise that our Chapel Choir is renowned for the quality of its singing. Members enter by audition, and are given the chance to tackle a broad range of challenging liturgical music.

Our Chamber Choir consists of a select group of 22 tenors and basses, and membership is highly competitive. Its repertoire is varied, including music by Palestrina, Byrd, Lotti and Victoria. In addition, the group occasionally appears as Sherborne Close Harmony, performing lighter music at dinners, informal recitals and weddings.

Sherborne School Choral Society is a major institution in the local community. Alongside 50 or so Shirburnians and 50 pupils from Sherborne Girls, it draws in a further 60 people from the local community, or parents and friends of Sherborne School. An annual performance in the Abbey, accompanied by a professional orchestra, takes place in February.

Members of the local community who wish to sing in the Choral Society should contact the Director of Music, James Henderson, by email (jhenderson@sherborne.org) T: 01935 810517. The Choral Society particularly welcomes sopranos but all voices are welcome to make contact - membership of the Choral Society is non-auditioned but there is an annual subscription fee of £20.

Previous performances have included Brahms' Requiem, Mozart's Requiem and Brahms' Schicksalsleid, Rossini's Stabat Mater and Puccini's Messa di Gloria, Duruflé's Requiem and Haydn's Te Deum, and Elgar's Dream of Gerontius.

Each year the School and the Abbey seek to appoint a number of gap-year students in September to the posts of Assistants in the Music School, Choral Scholars in the School Choir and Chamber Choir, and singers in the Abbey Choir. The appointments run from the beginning of September until the Sunday after school term ends in the summer (usually around 15th July) and include Christmas and Easter. Accommodation is provided within the town, free of charge, and three meals are available daily during school term.

To make an informal enquiry please contact James Henderson, Director of Music. T: 01935 810518
