Letter from Chairman of Governors
The process for determining a permanent appointment as Head of Sherborne School will commence immediately. Our intent is to have made this appointment by the end of this Michaelmas Term.
I am delighted to announce that, in the meantime, Ralph Barlow (currently Deputy Head) will serve as Headmaster.
Educated at St Olave’s Grammar School, Ralph read Mathematics at Bristol University before starting his teaching career at a large comprehensive school in Bristol. Following a term’s secondment to the DfES, Ralph was appointed as Head of Maths at The King’s School in Gloucester where he subsequently took on a number of other leadership roles before being appointed as Deputy Head at Birkenhead School, a 3-18 HMC school on the Wirral. Whilst leading the academic side of School life there, Ralph has seen standards rise significantly alongside an ethos of holistic education and pastoral care similar to Sherborne. Alongside his leadership and teaching, Ralph has found time at Birkenhead to conduct the Chapel Choir, direct musical productions and train a mathematics team who reached the national UK Mathematic Trust finals.
The Governors’ priority remains to ensure an excellent education for the boys who attend Sherborne - fully intending to maintain and enhance the salient characteristics of the School. We are confident that Ralph has the talent, dedication and experience to lead us in that endeavour. I know that you will join me in welcoming Ralph, his wife Liz, and their three young children to Sherborne and in his leadership of the School.
Gordon M W Parry
