Welcome to Sherborne School

Sherborne School is one of the leading independent schools in the country and has been educating boys for over 460 years, ever since its refoundation in 1550 under a royal charter granted by Edward VI. Built around Sherborne Abbey in a beautiful, bustling, small market town, and surrounded by rolling Dorset countryside, it enjoys a unique location. The benefits and advantages of this peaceful setting are enhanced by the ease of transport to London, with a direct train from Waterloo to Sherborne.

Sherborne offers an all-round education with a strong academic focus. We firmly believe that the best and most rewarding learning happens when boys are encouraged to be actively curious, flexible and open-minded, participating in, and shaping, their own learning. We also firmly believe that learning doesn't just happen in the classroom. Our pastoral care is itself an education, fostering the values of community, and actively seeking to develop the personal, emotional and social skills of each and every boy. And on the sports field, the stage, in the art schools, and in the community at large, Shirburnians are learning all the time as they strive to pursue excellence in all that they do. We want to equip boys to carry on learning for themselves long after they have left school.

The Sherborne community is close-knit and supportive but also dynamic and outward-looking. Shirburnians leave having developed lasting friendships. We very much value all the educational advantages of being a full boarding, all-boys school - one of only a very few in the country - while our strong links to the neighbouring girls' schools allow us to enjoy the best of all worlds.

Shirburnians follow a diverse range of careers at the highest levels and include Actors, Poets, Diplomats, Bishops, Politicians, Journalists, Financiers, Lawyers, Entrepreneurs and Sports stars to name but a few.

Visit our exceptional school to meet some of the boys and staff who make it such an inspirational place.
