Guy has had a career in Investment Banking spanning more than 35 years at Morgan Grenfell, Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch and now at Nomura where he is co-head of Investment Banking in EMEA and is a member of the Global Management Committee. Guy studied for an MA at Trinity College, Oxford and for an MBA at Insead, France. His son Oliver was in Harper House from 2012 to 2017 and Guy became a Governor at the start of 2020. Guy is a member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee.

Max (Abbeylands 1972 – 1977) is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Southampton Hospital, in addition to working for Southampton University as a Senior Tutor and a physiology lecturer. In his current role, Max is one of a team running a 45 bedded ICU and Trauma Unit at Southampton Hospital. Having studied medicine at St Thomas’s Hospital in London Max qualified as a Doctor in Intensive Care Medicine working at hospitals in London, Oxford and Cambridge. He has just stepped down from the Council for the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the European Board on Intensive Care Medicine. He has a keen interest in education, research and healthcare technology. Max lives in Hampshire, and is a former parent of the School

Nigel is a Chartered Surveyor and has been practising primarily in commercial property and development land matters in the area for 35 years. He is a specialist in property disputes, acting as an expert witness or arbitrator in contentious matters throughout southern England. He lives in Cattistock and has a daughter, who attended Sherborne Prep. Nigel is a sports fan with a particular interest in rugby and cricket, and is also a syndicate member in a racehorse!

Martin moved to Sherborne in 2021, as Team Rector of Sherborne Abbey. Having spent 13 years as the incumbent of a large parish in Newcastle upon Tyne. Before that he spent eight years in a rural parish in Somerset. A background in Music and Education before training for Ministry at St Stephen’s House, Oxford, he has used his keen interest in Education to serve on several Governing bodies with over 20 years’ experience as a Chair. He has also served as Chair of Appeal and Exclusion panels for local authorities. In his spare time, he is a Beekeeper, enjoys Music and now is delighted to add to the list of enjoyment the role of a Grandad. He is married to Sue, and they have three sons.

He then became Assistant Director of Studies at Millfield School before being appointed Head of Millfield Prep School. He completed his career as Headmaster of Dulwich Prep London for eighteen years. He is currently also a Governor of Caldicott Prep School. He is Chairman of Wilton’s Music Hall.

Having grown up and schooled in Yorkshire, Dr Ruth Newman went on to study Medicine at Imperial College London. Ruth graduated in 2005 and later moved to Bristol to complete specialist Paediatric training. Ruth became a General Paediatric Consultant at Dorset County Hospital in 2019 and has an interest in Paediatric Allergy, Eating Disorders and mental health. Ruth is heavily involved in medical education at the hospital and is passionate about working with young people, regarding it a privilege to do so. She has two children at Sherborne Prep School. Ruth has been a Governor since September 2022 and sits on the Pastoral Committee.

After graduating with a BEng (Cons) in Electronic Engineering from Bristol University he initially worked for IBM and Andersen Consulting (Accenture) before joining a 5 person business named Druid which he built into a FTSE250 company employing 700 staff across the globe. John is currently non-executive Chairman of CognitoIQ Ltd, non-executive Chairman of Maven Income and Growth VCT plc, director of Lightsong Media Group Ltd and non-executive director of Electric and General Fund. John is a trustee of the Sherborne School Foundation and was chairman from 2009 to 2019.

Mark Spearing

Mark Spearing

Mark Spearing is a Professor of Engineering Materials and Vice-President for Research and Enterprise at the University of Southampton. After leaving Sherborne (h) in 1982 he studied Engineering at Cambridge and completed a Ph.D at the same University in 1989. He then undertook postdoctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Mark worked for BP in Cleveland Ohio from 1992-1994. He then moved to the Aeronautics and Astronautics department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, leaving as a Full Professor in 2004 to join Southampton. His research and teaching focuses on the use of advanced materials, particularly composites, in engineering systems. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Mark is married with three children, two of whom attend Schools in the Winchester area and the eldest is taking a gap year.

Michael Wilson

Michael Wilson joined the Sherborne Board in April 2017. He is an Old Shirburnian, whose family has had its roots in Sherborne since the 1940s. He was the Principal of Cranleigh Abu Dhabi from July 2018 until August 2023, having previously run Cranleigh Prep School in the UK, where he was Headmaster for ten years. Michael was no stranger to the Abu Dhabi school, having played a pivotal role in its foundation and development. He remains based in Abu Dhabi advising the Education Ministry on a new model for education. Michael has over 30 years of top class British educational experience. Runner up in the Tatler ‘Best Prep School Head Award’ in 2016, the majority of his career as an educator has been in the UK but his CV also tells a story of passion for international education. Apart from his significant involvement with Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Mike has spent four years teaching in his native Kenya (where he also coached the national tennis team) and he also played a key role in the establishment of Dulwich International College in Phuket, Thailand when it opened in 1997. His career has taken him into every area of school life, as a practitioner, manager and, for the best part of the past 20 years, as a leader. Michael has held a number of senior roles in leading UK schools including being Headmaster at Edge Grove School and Head of Sixth Form and careers at Bradfield College. He has been on the Board of Trustees at Mill Hill, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and Shrewsbury House Preparatory School. Michael is married to Carolyn, who is a teacher and they have three boys in their 20s. His interests are sport, wildlife and chocolate.
