Sherborne’s reputation as a football-playing school has grown in recent years.
Whilst the focus of the Michaelmas Term is rugby, an U18 squad fully commits to football in the Michaelmas Term and plays competitive fixtures in the ISFA accredited Wessex Independent Schools League. Indeed, Sherborne School has now been crowned Champions of the league in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Other boys also have the opportunity to play football since we enter the ISFA Cup and Shield competitions at U15, and U18 level. In addition, we also particate in the Dorset County Cup.
Outside of these Cups and Leagues, boys compete in either the Junior and Senior House Futsal competition during this first term. However, it is in Lent Term where boys have the greatest opportunity for both Senior School (Fifth Form and Sixth Form) and Junior School boys (Third and Fourth Form) to play football. This routinely allows us to have at least 14 teams who, amongst others, play fixtures against Millfield School, QEH Bristol, Monmouth School, Clifton College, Bristol Grammar School, Canford, Bryanston and local club teams.
In Lent, we also compete in an ISFA accredited league, this time the South West Independent Schools (SWIS) league. A separate league is established for each team against some of the teams mentioned above.
Allied to other sports, football is a key part of the Independent School sporting provision at Sherborne School and we are proud to be offering a programme to suit every boy who wishes to participate. To achieve this, the School’s Master in Charge of Football, Dr J-P Manning, works closely with Mr Chris Weale, the Director of Football Coaching, to deliver programmes for both performance and participation, enabling them to improve, and importantly, enjoy their football here at Sherborne.
