Life in Abbey House

Abbey House is located right at the heart of the School and is convenient for the music school, sports centre, library and dining hall.  It is proud of its warm, lively atmosphere.

We aim very much to be an ‘all-round' house, which means we give a good account of ourselves across the whole spectrum of inter-house activities (e.g. debating, music competitions, sport) and are well represented at school level in terms of academic prizes, the orchestra, choir and sports.

It doesn’t matter what a boy’s forte is – it could be cricket, singing, chemistry or photography.  What matters is that he is able to flourish and self-actualise, both as an individual and as part of a community where the mantra is “Connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give”.

We demand high levels of commitment from our House team and regard the wellbeing of every individual boy as our first priority.  Finally, we ask parents that we work together in an open, honest partnership on the important business of developing their son’s character and capabilities.

About the Housemaster

Housemaster: Hugh Tatham

Hugh Tatham, formerly our Assistant Head (Co-curricular) and a member of the Religious Studies Department. Having boarded as a Chorister at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and then at Lancing College, Mr Tatham studied Theology at the University of Oxford where he was awarded an Open Exhibition. He then began his teaching career at Prior Park College, Bath, as Resident Tutor, teacher of Religious Studies and with a wide-ranging sports coaching profile.

In 1999, he moved to Monmouth School where, over the next sixteen years, he was variously Head of Religious Education, Head of PSHE, Housemaster of a day house and, for seven years, a member of the Senior Management Team as Head of Sixth Form. He joined Sherborne in Michaelmas 2015 and will be known both through his teaching and through his coaching of Rugby and Cricket.

His leisure interests revolve heavily around both sport and music and he lists Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Michael Atherton amongst a diverse cast of personal heroes. Hugh is married to Claire, who is a member of our Mathematics Department. They have two boys, JP and William, both of whom are pupils at Sherborne Prep.
