Sherborne School were delighted to host a week of high-level cricket matches to raise funds and awareness for the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

In glorious sunshine, the week-long cricket extravaganza featured an impressive line-up of competitive matches between talented cricket teams who showcased their skills on the hallowed grounds of The Upper, at Sherborne School.

With teams from Cheltenham College, Haileybury, Stowe, Cerne Valley CC and a visiting team from Australia, St Peter’s Adelaide, the week culminated in Sherborne School’s 1st XI v the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club.

As for the Sherborne School 1st XI, they triumphed in a wonderful match overcoming their Australian guests by just 10 runs in a match which yielded over 600 runs in the day! They then ended the week and their season in a draw with the MCC in an epic contest, enlivened by the presence of former England bowler Richard Ellison as one of the umpires.

Organiser of the event was Master in Charge of Cricket, Hugh Tatham who said:

‘I am incredibly proud to help raise the profile of the Ruth Strauss Foundation and the support from all involved has been fantastic, the weather has been kind and the standard of cricket, simply sparkling’.

The Ruth Strauss Foundation was established in memory of Ruth Strauss, the beloved wife of former England cricket captain Sir Andrew Strauss. The Foundation has undertaken wonderful work since its inception in 2019, raising huge amounts of money to fund research into non-smoking cancers and to support bereaved families. Sherborne School’s event has already raised over £2,000 for the charity.
