This year’s Patrick Shelley Music Competition, on Sunday 23rd June, was a feast of music-making lasting no less than nine hours. Music of outstanding quality was performed by forty-eight entrants, many of whom performed on more than one instrument, with Hilary Davan Wetton praising all of them and then declaring the winners to be:

 

Strings:                                  Jack Pyman (violin), Kit Hobbs (‘cello’) and Gary Xu (double bass)

Piano:                                    Ciaran Smith, Tom McCaig and David Chen

Organ:                                   George Jefferson

Percussion:                           Ranco Liu (marimba) and Tom O’Sullivan (drum kit)

Brass:                                    Ben Fuller

Woodwind:                           Nathanael Fagerson (bassoon)

Singers:                                 Jordan Mwangola, Bently Creswell and Jack Pyman

Commended singers:          Angus Williams and Hendrik Asbrooke

Overall winner:                    Nathanael Fagerson (bassoon, ‘cello, piano, baritone singer)
