The grey skies did not deter to members of the public and Sherborne School community who gathered in Cheap Street Church on Friday 15th November to hear the lunchtime recital performed by Sherborne School Jazz soloists and Jazz Band. A capacity audience were taken on a musical journey through the American Songbook led by James Henderson, Director of Music, who accompanied the outstanding solo performances featuring classic songs, "Have you met Miss Jones?" (Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart), performed by Jonathan Post (trumpet), "Witchcraft" (Cy Coleman) sung by James Miller and "Beyond the Sea" (Charles Trenet and Jack Lawrence) sung by Sam Reynolds. Tenor saxophonists, Max Lewis and Matt MacDonald serenaded the delighted audience with "My Melancholy Baby" (Ernie Burnett) and "Fly me to the Moon" (Bart Howard); and Lucas Gardner (alto saxophone) demonstrated his fine technique in Bob Mintzer's “Ballad”. The Sherborne School Jazz Band, led by Anthony Ingle, brought the recital to a rousing finale with his original composition, "Only Asking" with fine solos from Fergus Burtt (clarinet), Matt MacDonald (alto saxophone) and Max Lewis (tenor saxophone). Frank Zappa's "King Kong" featuring a sensational drum kit solo from Tom O'Sullivan elicited warm and enthusiastic appreciation from the audience.
